Marriage of William Law and Marie Worth★

William Law married Maria Worth (most likely in Cheshire) between 1832 and 1835. The estimated time and place of their marriage is based on:

  • The Law family moved to Stockport circa 1832
  • Marie Worth Law was born in Cheshire circa 1811. Marie Worth Law indicated on the censuses that she was born in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
  • Lydia, the daughter of William Law and Mary Worth Law, was baptized in Stockport in October 1835.
  • Mary's maiden name was taken from the civil birth records of her children.

Note: I looked for the marriage of William Law and Marie Worth in the Church of England records for Wilmslow and Stockport and did not find anything. The marriage is NOT listed under either Law or Worth in the North & East Cheshire Marriage index 1754 to 1837. Nothing on Ancestry.com as of January 2015.

Addresses for William Law and Mary Worth in Yorkshire

Sometime between the death of Benjamin Law on February 21, 1837 in Stockport and December 1837, the Law family moved back to Yorkshire where William and Mary Law were listed:

  1. Beggerington, Woodkirk, West Ardsley (about a mile and a half east of Batley) at the birth of Emma in 1838. "Ardsley West" was also know as Woodkirk.
Ardsley West is a parish in the Wakefield district, Yorkshire. It is 5 miles north-west of Wakefield. In 1868 it included six hamlets and a post office. In 1868 the population was 1,646.

The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, by John Marius Wilson, published in 1870

  2. Sunny Bank, Upper Batley at the birth of Littice in 1840. Sunny Bank is very near the site of Benjamin Law's old mill in Howley.

Isabelle (1842) married Thomas Wailes. Mary Ann (1845) married Sam Land - a son of the first marriage of John Land. Lydia, Isabelle and Mary Ann all ended up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He was a twin. See Bertha below.

Questions: Why was he named Aquilla Holroyd? Holyroyd was/is a surname. His twin Bertha was named Bertha Ward. Several months after the birth of Aquilla and Bertha Carrie, (Catherine) Pickering married James Ward. Holroyd was not a family name on the Law side. Was it a family name on the Pickering side? Or did does it give some clue to the paternity of Aquilla?

In January 2015 Norma Bellini a descendant of Catherine Pickering and James Ward wrote:

I recall stories told by Ada Ward (daughter of Carrie and James), that Carrie had a few children before her marriage to James Ward. There was also a story that the local squire had wanted to marry Carrie, but had be "forbidden" - was he perhaps the father of the illegitimate children?!

Children of Carrie and James - Family stories relate that Bertha, and a twin brother, Aquilla, were born "out of wedlock" (December 24th 1890) and that Aquilla was given away at birth. I can find no trace of Aquilla and there are conflicting family stories - in one he died of gangrene poisoning in his leg during the First WW, (perhaps he is being confused with John Arthur) in another he made contact with a family member some years later. This will always remain a mystery. In the Last Will and Testament of James Ward he was required to refer to Bertha as "my daughter, Bertha Pickering Ward" others were simply referred to as "my children".

James was not only a publican, he was also a gifted musician. Together with all of his children, except Hubert, he formed a Music Hall group and they performed in many of the Northern Music Halls. James was a pianist who not only played, but composed, particularly rag-time. Away from the Music Hall he was a lover of 'classical' music and was a fan of Wagner. He chose as his stage name 'Rengaw' ( Wagner in reverse). He was not licensed to perform in his pubs, but stories are told that he opened the doors while 'practicing' at his piano, and people would wander in to listen to him (no doubt they also bought a drink and a meat pie!) Of his children I believe Gilbert played the Jews Harp (a type of mouth organ?), Edgar played piano, Ada was a comedienne and Bertha, my grandmother, was a singer, known as 'The Yorkshire Nightingale'. By the time she was 16 Bertha has lost a leg and an eye, both as a result of accidents. I have been told that she would be carried on to the stage and sat on a swing before the curtains opened. She had a beautiful soprano voice, even as late as her death in the 1980s. I have actually met two people who remember seeing her performing in the Music Hall. Ironically, Bertha died of gangrene poisoning in her remaining leg. Was this coincidence that so did her twin brother, Aquilla, or had stories become mixed over the years?

  6. Hannah Law, born 1849 in New Batley

      Birth
      • Church Record: Did not find as of January 2015
      • Civil Record: Hannah, daughter of William Law clothier, and Marie Law, formerly Worth, was born December 8, 1849, birth reported by Marie Law, mother, her mark, New Batley, Batley.
Further Records: With her parents in 1861.

I do not know what happened to Hannah Law.

Note: I assume that William and Mary had other children who died young. The break of 5 years between Mary Ann and Hannah is quite large given the rate of reproduction at the time. Since William would have been 27 years old at the time of Lydia's birth it is possible that he had other children before Lydia.

Death of Marie/Maria/Mary Worth Law after 1871

I have not found the death record for Mary Worth Law. She was listed in the 1871 census

Maria Law at 45 Wood Wele as the head of household, widowed, age 59, occupation, grocer, born in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

I did not find her for certain in the 1881 census. There is a listing for Mary Law age 67 widow, shopkeeper born Bacup on Healy Street. The age is okay, Bacup is not.

No appropriate deaths for Mary, Marie or Maria Law on Freebmd as of October 2011.

The death records for Batley on Ancestry.com are missing many years between 1871 and 1891.
