The Lands in America

Children of the Marriage of John Land and Mary Dyson in America

John Land had six children by his first marriage:

  • Two of the children of the first marriage went to "America":
    • Samuel Land (born 1843), his wife, Mary Ann Law Land (the sister of his stepmother, Lydia Law), and their children immigrated to Philadelphia circa 1871 where they remained.
    • William Land (born 1847) immigrated to Philadelphia sometime between 1871 and 1873 and returned to England by 1875. William was listed in the 1871 census in Batley, England so the earliest he could have gone to Philadelphia was sometime after the census was taken in March or April of 1871. William Land was listed in the 1881 census Batley, England. The listing included:
      • A son, Benjamin, born in "America" circa 1873
      • A son, John W., born in Batley circa 1875.
Since, William had to have returned by the end of 1875 or early 1876, when John W. was born, the longest he could have been in "America" was 4 years. William was between the ages of 23 and 25 and married when he went to "America". See John Land and his family.
  • Two of the children of the first marriage remained in England:
    • Charles Land (born 1852) was listed in the 1891 and 1901 censuses in Keighley. See John Land
    • James Dunford Land (born 1855) was listed in the 1901 census in England. See John Land
  • I do not know what happened to the remaining children of the first marriage:
    • John (born 1841)
    • Elizabeth Ann (born 1849) Note: She was listed, weaver, age 21, born Wakefield with Samuel in the 1871 census in Batley. She may have immigrated to Philadelphia. Elizabeth Land was a sponsor at a baptism in St Timothy's in Manayunk in 1884.

Note: I have not been able to find records for immigration to Philadelphia from 1871 to 1875. The indexes for immigration do not start until 1883.

Children of the Marriage of John Land and Lydia Law in America

  1. Law Land, the first son of the marriage of John Land and Lydia Law, immigrated to Toronto, Canada, circa 1882, with his wife, Elizabeth Sykes and their infant son, Clarence.

  2. After John Land's death, his widow, Lydia, and the remaining seven children, Albert, Percy, Arthur, Harry, Adelaide, Polly and Walter, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1883.
