Lydia's Immigration to Philadelphia

John Land died on October 26, 1877 leaving Lydia with eight children between the ages of 19 and 3 years old.

Lydia's first son, Law, and his wife, Elizabeth, immigrated to Toronto, Canada circa 1882.

Lydia and her seven remaining children immigrated to Philadelphia via New York City in 1883. They were listed on the SS Paris which sailed from Liverpool and Londontown to New York City and arrived in New York on July 9, 1883 as follows:

  1. Lydia Land, age 47, female, wife, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, for'd main
  2. Albert, age 21, male, labourer, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, for'd main
  3. Percy, age 18, male, labourer, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, for'd main
  4. Arthur, age 16, male, labourer, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, for'd main
  5. Harry, age 14, male, labourer, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, for'd main
  6. Adelaide, age 11, child, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, main
  7. Polly, age 10, child, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, main
  8. Walter, age 6, child, born in England, destination, Philadelphia, main

Note: Lydia and Albert's ages are correct. The ages of Percy, Arthur, Harry, Adelaide, Polly and Walter are not correct as listed. However, the order of names is correct and this surely represents the family of Lydia Land.

A passage to the United States in 1870 cost about five to six weeks of wages.

Lydia and her children settled in the Manayunk/Roxborough section of Philadelphia.

It is hard to believe that Lydia would have left England for Philadelphia at age 47 with seven children ranging in age from 6 to 21 unless she had very little support in Batley and the prospect of good support in Philadelphia. Lydia's sister, Mary Anne Law, her husband, Samuel Land (Lydia's step son) and their children lived in Manayunk/Roxborough. They had immigrated to Philadelphia circa 1871. See Samuel and Mary Ann Land in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Board of Health Records

The Board of Heath kept records for birth, marriage and death. Records are available to 1915. Birth records up to 1904 do not include the maiden name of the mother. The Philadelphia Board of Health records which are on microfilm are not in the best shape for genealogical research. Many of the microfilms are over or under exposed making it impossible to read much of the information.

Albert Land died in 1886.

The records is very faint and hard to read.

Arthur Land (1864-??)

No further records. I looked for marriage and death records and did not find anything. Since the records are so faded a potential record may have been missed. Arthur does not turn up in any of the censuses or in the Philadelphia directories. It is possible that he too died at a relatively young age.

He was not listed in the 1892 directory in Manayunk/Roxborough.

Not listed in the 1900, 1910, 1920 or 1930 census.

Daughter was Eva Daniels Kirbyson. Eva had a daughter, Ruth Kirbyson. Percy had a daughter, Nancy Daniels. Adelaide (Auntie, as we called her) came to our house every week to see Grandma. She made the beds and dusted a little, then she & Grandma would sit on our porch and talk- about old times. I'm sure. She was quite tiny. Sitting on the porch chair her feet did not touch the floor.

Nancy did marry but we lost touch with her then, so know nothing of her family."

Polly Land and John Wooler

Information in this section written in blue type comes from Holly Wooler, the wife of Wooler descendant, Charles Wooler, through Polly Land Wooler's son, Norman.

Marriage

Polly Land married John D. Wooler on July 7, 1891. 1871 marriage certificate #44421 lists:

Polly Land, born in England September 21, 1871, occupation, weaver, residing at Ridge Ave. Philadelphia

Because Polly was only 19 years old at the time of the marriage Lydia Land was required to give consent. Lydia was listed as a widow, mother of Polly Land, residing at 3726 Ridgedale Ave., Philadelphia.

Minister: Jno Walker Jackson.

A 1891 Directory shows the Rev J. W. Jackson was the minister at Wissahickon Methodist Episcopal Church on Terrace Street. To see pictures of this church go to Wissahickon Methodist Episcopal Church, Terrace & Harvey Sts., Wissahickon, Penna. Ballinger Collection, Athenaeum of Philadelphia

Helen Land' Notes, 1983

Law's "sister, Polly (Mrs John Wooler) lived in Wessahicken (sic) Pennsylvania (near Philadelphia) died at age 73, September 21, 1944. She and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Barbara, visited in Smithtown in 1942."
Photos

In Helen Land's photo collection there were three photos of Aunt Polly's granddaughters. However, on the back of all three pictures they are identified as Barbara and "Ruth" Wooler. All three pictures were taken at Kenyon's Beach.
  1. The two girls sitting at the end of a row boat.
  2. Helen standing with a girl on each side and Agnes Goehle Land's sister, Betty Goehle, sitting to one side of them unaware that a picture was being taken.
  3. Agnes Goehle Land, two of her sisters, Nelly Goehle and Betty Goehle, the two Wooler girls and Helen Land whose face has been cut out.

Death of John Wooler

John Daniel Wooler died in 1957.

Death of Polly Wooler

Polly Land Wooler died on 12/23/51

I cannot access these death records in Philadelphia. They were not listed in the SSDI.

Email from Holly Wooler September 2, 2004 about her visit with Barbara and Ruth Wooler

We had a very nice visit with Barbara and Ruth. They are both very sweet sisters. We got to know them a little better and it was nice they were able to meet all of our children, as well as my husband's brother (Bill Wooler) and his family. The last time Barbara and Ruth saw Bill was when he was about 13 years old--he's now 49! So that was fun!

I found out a little bit more about "the Wooler sisters" and jotted some notes down while they chatted. Barbara and Ruth's mother died when Barbara was around 18 months old and so John and Polly Wooler "adopted" them and helped raise them. Barbara and Ruth's father was Frank Wooler. Barbara brought me "photocopies" of old photos and filled us in on who they were/are.

I have a "photo" of Polly and John with all their children: Lucy, Alice, Albert, Frank, Norman, John Jr., William (Bill), and Roland (whom they called Ted).

Polly Land Wooler died on 12/23/51; John Daniel Wooler died in 1957. The girls have fond memories of their grandparents and we had some laughs. Apparently Polly was often "the life of the party" although in the photos she looked serious.

John helped build Wissahickon Methodist Church. John's brother (Robert) was the choir director there then. They said that Polly "made a pledge" to help with the cost of the church building and baked bread. She sent her children out to sell the bread and the proceeds when towards the church building.

Ruth said that the records from the Wissahickon Methodist Church were sent to the First Methodist Church in Roxborough on Green Lane when the church was sold. Barbara used to play the pipe organ at that church and was trying to purchase some of them when the church was sold. I don't think she did though. I believe that old church was converted into an apartment building.

Barbara and Ruth said their home always had people passing in and out--central location and family members lived near by. Brother Albert lived right next door, sister Lucy lived down the street and sister Alice lived just 1 block away.

When talking with my father-in-law (Howard Wooler, the 3rd son of Norman and Alvenia Wooler), he said they lived on 206 Dawson Street. (I think your's is spelled incorrectly in the listing) Son #2, Robert's, middle name is Leroy, so it's an "L" and not an "S". Raymond is the 4th son and he is not listed in your findings: Raymond was born on 1/24/30.

I also have a photo of the newspaper article of Norman Wooler Jr's death. It says: "Private Norman Wooler Jr, Marine, 19, of 512 Overlook Road, Wissahickon Hills; Okinawa, May 19, 1945." He looks so very young--even our youngest son is 21. What a shame Norman was killed in the war.

Barbara and Ruth told us about the terrible accident that my husband's grandfather suffered right around the same time Robert Wooler was to marry. Apparently he was hit by car and was caught underneath the car. He was dragged for quite some distance before the vehicle stopped. They thought he surely would not live through the night.

Barbara and Ruth's father, Frank, went to the emergency hospital to be with Norman. He was in the hospital for 9 months and underwent 12 operations. It is something that he even survived. Barbara said that Norman came and lived with them as he was recovering from the accident.

Frank made a special walker for him to lean on so he could walk again. Norman graduated from the walker to 2 canes and then eventually to just one cane. He had a limp for the rest of his life and always used a cane. Barbara and Ruth said Uncle Norman was always nice and kind to them.

I remember visiting Grandfather Norman in the hospital just a little while before he died. Charlie and I had married in April of that same year (1977). I remember Grandfather thought I was Eleanor--his favorite niece; Eleanor is the daughter of Robert and Claire Wooler. (She lives in Harrisburg with her family and we know them through church connections--we just saw them on Sunday, as my husband was asked to preach at their church.) I only saw Grandfather that once and then I attended his funeral.

Well, we are hoping to stay in closer touch with Barbara and Ruth. Barbara grew up to become a nurse. She married David Land (not related to you) and became a widow. I don't know how long they were married, but I thought I heard that he was sickly when they married. (?) Barbara lives in Roxborough. She and David did not have any children. Ruth is married and had 3 or 4 children and I think she said 13 grandchildren. They live up in Muncy, PA. It would be nice if we could see each other more often.

Lydia's Purchase of Property in Smithtown in 1899

On September 28, 1899, Lydia Land of Philadelphia contracted to buy

"All that certain tract of land situated in the Vilage (sic) of Hauppauge, town of Smithtown, County of Suffolk and State of New York and bounded as follows. On the North by land of Henry Morris, on the west by land of Nelly Mercone (McCrane), on the south by the road leading through Hauppauge, on the East by land of Elmer Blydenburgh and Sarah J. Saper. Containing about two or three acres be the same more or less. Being the estate of the late Zephaniah Smith deceased. Together with all and singular the tenements hereditaments and appurtenances thereto belonging".
The sale of the property was completed October 6, 1899. Notaries in Philadelphia and the Suffolk County Clerk's Office executed the paper work for the sale. It does not appear that Lydia was present in person for the transaction.

Why did she buy this piece of property in Hauppauge? How did she know that it was for sale? How could she afford it? (I don't know how much she paid for it; there is no mention of an amount on the deed.) Why did she stay in Philly instead of moving to Smithtown?

In 1901 Lydia sold the property to her son, Law. He was living, at least part time, on the property before he bought it from Lydia.

I have no idea if Lydia, or any of her other children, beside Polly, ever came to Long Island. Polly visited Smithtown in 1942.

There was never any mention on the part of Bud Land or Helen Land, who have been my sources for family information, that Lydia Land even immigrated to the United States, let alone bought land in Hauppauge in 1899.

The records for the Methodist church in Hauppauge indicate that one of the founding members of the congregation was John Laws. The US censuses show that there was no close connection between John Laws and Lydia Land, Law Land and the Laws of Batley England.

The Land in the 1900 Census in Philadelphia

Lydia was listed with two of her children, Adelaide and Walter, in the 1900 census in Philadelphia.

Polly Land and her husband, John Wooler, and Harry and his wife, Tervillia Reinart, were also listed in the 1900 census in Philadelphia.

Lydia Land in the 1900 Census

The 1900 federal census in Philadelphia lists the family of Lydia Law at 4078 Pechin Street in Enumeration District One, section 470. Ruth Fry believes that Lydia was buried in Leverington Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Other Lands in Who Immigrated Through Philadelphia

LDS microfilm 0419502 contains an "La" through Larsen index for passengers arriving though the port of Philadelphia from 1800 to 1906. I do not know if this is a complete list. There were only two Lands listed:

  1. William Land, age 16, who arrived on the J H Glidden on August 9, 1850
  2. Charles D. Land, age 27, single, who arrived on the Pennsylvania on August 30, 1883

I do not know it William and Charles were related to the branch of the Land family that I am researching.
