George Stell, woolcomber (1752-1809)

George Stell was born in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1752, the son of Joseph Stell and Mary Sharp. He married Isabelle Lawson in Birstall Parish in 1785. They had: Joseph Lawson Stell (1786), Samuel Stell (1787), Nathan Stell (1790), Benjamin Stell (1793), Ann Stell Sykes (1796), Mary Stell (1799) and Betty Stell (1802).

George Stell's "Book"

George Stell kept a "book". He entitled it

"Geoe Stell Book Feby 22, Anno 1785

On the first two pages he listed the births and baptisms of his seven children: Joseph Lawson Stell (1786), Samuel Stell (1787), Nathan Stell (1790), Benjamin (1793), Ann Stell (1796) Mary Stell (1799) and Betty Stell (the date is torn off but she was born in 1802 as indicated by the parish records)

The next several pages seem to be in the same hand. They included some poems and other writings that were not originals by George Stell. The writing changes and at one point there are several drawings and a date of May 7 1844. George had died in 1809. The major portion of the book starts at the back and includes classic arithmetic problems. The book was in the possession of that part of the Stell family who ended up in Edinburgh Scotland. George's forth child was Benjamin born in 1793. Benjamin had a son, George Prophet Stell born in 1834. In turn, George Prophet Stell had a daughter, Margaret Galbraith Stell (1873) who married John Smith. The book was in the possession of their son, Harry Smith, when he died in 1983. Harry and his wife, Jessie Fraser were childless. After Jessie Smith died in 2006 her niece, Dorothy Horey, found the book in a book case. The bookcase and contents had been given to Harry in the 1960s by "Uncle Walter".

Dorothy Horey is not a Stell decedent so she went looking on the Internet for someone who was and she found me. She most generously sent me the "book".

I am descended from of George Stell as follows:

George Stell (1752) and Isabelle Lawson

    1. Anne Stell (1796) and John Sykes
      2. George Stell Sykes (1826) and Sarah Walker
        3. Elizabeth Sykes (1859) and Law Land
          4. Percy Land (1885) and Meta Petermann
            5. Edgar (Bud) Land (1915) and Agnes Goehle
              6. Maggie Land Blanck (1944)

Law Land and Elizabeth Sykes left England in the 1880. Their son Percy was born in Canada. The family came to the United States circa 1890.

George Stell (1752-1809), Birth

George Stell, the son of Joseph Stell of Fellane, Keighley Parish, was baptized in the Independent (or Congregational) Church in Keighley on February 30, 1752.

Occupation

George Stell was a woolcomber. Wool combers were connected with the worsted industry.

See Weaving in Yorkshire

Marriage, 1785

George Stell married Isabelle Lawson, "both of Gomersall" on February 22, 1785 in Birstall parish (BiBT). Both signed.

Isaelle Lawson: Isabelle (AKA, Tabby and Tabytha) Lawson was living in Gomersall when she married George Stell. There is no record of her birth in Birstall parish. It is possible that she was the daughter of Lawrence Lawson and his wife Ann. They were the only Lawsons living in Birstall parish and the had connections to Gomersall.

See Isabelle Lawson and the Lawsons

Note: George was 33 at the time of this marriage. It is quite possible it was a second marriage.

Harry Smith (B: 1904) also a linotype operator, married Jessie Fraser in 1943. They had no children. Harry died in 1983. He was a lovely quite man with a gentle sense of humour. He was a very good golfer and taught my aunt to golf early in their relationship. She went on to be a golf fanatic who won many cups and was Ladies' Captain of several clubs in Edinburgh. Even in her nineties she watched all the golf competitions on television with great intensity. Through their shared interest in golf they had a lively social life and many firends. Harry latterly was a partner in a company which had sole dealership in Scotland for Heidelberg Printers and when not selling them was traveling all over the county servicing them.

          Dorothy Horey March 2012

Jessie Fraser: (B 1913) was my mother's sister and she died in 2006. When clearing our her home after she died I came across the notebook tucked into a bookcase. The bookcase and contents had been left to Harry by 'Uncle Walter' when he died at the age of 90 back in the sixties and I wonder if Jessie was even aware of the existence of the notebook as she never mentioned it. I never met Walter and my searches for the name 'Walter Stell' in the records produced nothing so I have no idea what relationship he had to the family or who he might have got the book from"

THE BOOK

The book was reported to have been given to Harry Smith by an "Uncle Walter" who was in his 90s when he died in the 1960s.

Walter's last name is not known. A search for Walter Stell in Edinburgh turned up little.

Walter Stell

Scotland People does not turn up any search results for "Walter Stell".

  1. The Edinburgh Gazatte, April 4, 1913 "March 27, 1913 WITHOUT COMPETITION Admiralty: Chatham Dockyards: Engine Fitters, Walter Stell"

  2. Walter Stell born circa 1874 Shipley, son of John (1831) and Sarah Stell per 1871 census:

"Walter Stell residing at "Westaway", 115 Kenton Road, in the city and county of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and carrying on business at 250 High Street West, Sunderland, in the county of Durham, draper.

The first two pages of George Stell's book list the births of his children.

The next several pages of the book include copies of poems and other works that were not original to George Stell.

The first of these pages contains three poems:

  1. The first relating to John Manners Marquees of Granby and Colonel of the Blues. John Manners (1721-1770)
Let all the Blues with pious grief
in this last march attend their chief
and deck his tomb with banners
    Courage and courtesy adieu
for Granby's gone and with him flew
    the essence of good Manners
I cannot find this "poem" on the Internet.

  2. The second appears to deal with women's hair fashion:
    On Woman

With corles they build their heads before
and mount it with a formable tower
a giantess she seems but look behind
and then she dwindles to the pigmy kind

    Dryden

John Dryden (1631-1700) was an English poet. I cannot find this particular phrase but it seems consistent with his style and his attitude toward women.
  3. The third entry is an anti tobacco ditty that had been around from at least 1613.
    On tobacco

Tobacco that outlandish weede it dryes the brain it spoils the seed it dulls the spirit dims the sight it robs a woman of her right

Sir William Vaughan, an English author of the reign of James I., appears to have been of the same opinion : "To conclude the abuses of tobacco, I wish the favourites thereof to repeat over these plaine rithmes":
    Tobacco, that outlandish weede,
    ****
It dulls the sprite, it dims the sight,
It robs a woman of her right."
Directions for Health, 1613.A paper:--of tobacco: treating of the rise, progress, pleasures, and ... By William Andrew Chatto

The next page also contains three segments :
  1. An Idea of Wedlock Ancient and Modern

In ancient times as poets sing
Love was a great and glorious thing
    A fire celestial and devine
That warmed the with chaste desire the mind
    *But nowadays no female heart
    Is captivated by desert.
The wealthy fool in gaudy dress
Alone can hope to find success.
Love-vows are now all cant and jargon,
And wedlocks grown a Smithfield bargain.

I did not find the beginning but from * it is credited to Rev Jacob Coering (Memoirs of Rev. Jacob Goering, Rev. George Lochman, D.D., and Rev. Benjamin ... By Charles Augustus Hay)

There were some transcription errors in this section. For instance Pettish was written "Pevish" and Lusty was written "laze"

  3. Friendship take heed if woman interferes Be sure the hour of thy destructions near.
The works of Henry Fielding: complete in one volume, with Memoir of the author By Henry Fielding

The next page contains a long poem on mourning "the loss of a friend". I cannot find it on the Internet. The lower quarter of the page contains the following.

Oft on my Knees at Church I've been,
One Prayer my first and last:
A Husband is the Thing I mean,
I found it in The complete letter-writer; or, Polite English secretary By English secretary, Complete letter-writer and other books dated 1755 and 1772

The next several pages included:

Robert Burns's POEMS OF THE WINDOW-PANE.

Ye gods! ye gave to me a wife
Out of your grace and favour,
To be a comfort to my life;
And I was glad to have her.
But if your Providence divine
Fur other ends design her.
To obey your will at any lime
I'm ready to resign her.

A SONNET.

OH bird of Eve! whose love sick-note
I hear across the dale;
Who nightly to the Moon and me,
Dost tell thy plaintive tale!
Oh hear a brother mourner's prayer!
To Anna's window fly; Tell her I bleed for love of her,
For love of her I die.

Lord Mornington

A version of the "Laconic Sermon"
A Laconic Sermon.-Job, c. 1, v. 21, "Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither." In discoursing from these words, I shall observe the three following things: First, man's ingress into the world; secondly, his progress through the world; and, thirdly, his egress out of the world. To return, first, man's ingress into the world is naked and bare; secondly, his progress through the world is trouble and care; and, thirdly, his egress out of the world is nobody knows where. To conclude, if we do well here, we shall be well there; and I could tell you no more were I to preach a whole year.
George Houston 1812

The beginning as written by George Stell is a little different but the essence is the same.

Then come two pages of what appear to be recipes for horse's ailments.

This is followed by:
A HYMN BY MR. STELL ON THE DEATH OF ANN SUGDEN

The words are to a known Baptist hymn written by Anne Steele and first published in 1760.

When those we love are snatched away
By death's resistless hand,
Our hearts the mournful tribute pay
That friendship must demand.

While pity prompts the rising sigh,
With awful power imprest;
May this dread truth, "I too must die,"
Sink deep in ev'ry breast.

Let this vain world allure no more;
Behold the opening tomb;
It bids us use the present hour,
To-morrow death may come.

The voice of this instructive scene
May ev'ry heart obey!
Nor be the faithful warning vain
Which calls to watch and pray.

O let us to that Saviour fly;
Whose arm alone can save;
Then shall our hopes ascend on high.
And triumph o'er the grave.

Again there are some transcription errors and some variations between George's entry and the traditional words as given above.

Death and Burial of a Young Person by Anne Steele (1716 - 1778).

Ann Steele was an English poet, Baptist preacher, and hymn writer. I do not think she was a relative of the "Stells".

The next two plus pages are entitled

Prince Eugenes Character and Prayer

Prince Eugenes of Savoy died April 21, 1736.

There follows two pages dealing with weights and measures.

The Jewish Account of Time Money & Weights

Jewish Weights

Measures of Length

Measures of Capacity

These lists of weights and measures is based on the work of Bishop Cumberland.
[Richard Cumberland, Bishop of Peterborough, was born in London in 1632. He was educated at St. Paul's School and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He distinguished himself considerably at College. He left the University to become Rector of Brampton, Northamptonshire, whence he was transferred to Stamford. William and Mary rewarded his fidelity to the Protestant cause at the Revolution by appointing him, much to his own surprise, to the Bishopric of Peterborough. He died in 1718 in his eightyseventh year. ]

BISHOP CUMBERLAND is best known by his Essay towards the recovery of the Jewish Measures and Weights, comprehending their Monies, by help of Ancient Standards, compared with ours of England. This little treatise is not without some historic interest even at this day, and shows considerable ingenuity and reasoning ability.

He published also a translation of Sanchoniatho's Phoenician history, from Eusebius, together with Eratosthenes' continuation, "with many historical and chronological remarks," so runs the titlepage, "proving them to contain a series of Phoenician and Egyptian chronology, from the first Man to the first Olympiad, agreeable to the Scripture accounts." After his death, as a sort of sequel to the above, was published a collection of tracts by his lordship entitled Origines Gentium Antiquissima; or, Attempts for Discovering the Times of the First Planting of Nations. Bishop Cumberland also wrote a work in Latin, on The Laws of Nature; Divine, Moral, and Political, which has been translated and edited.

The bishop wrote an excessively bad style, alike in Latin and in English. He is often quite unintelligible and always dull. Long, involved sentences, and tedious, almost irrelevant, digressions, mar his pages. That he was a man of deep learning, careful judgment, and acute reasoning power is evident enough, but that he either could not or would not put his doubtless valuable matter into an attractive form, is also only too painfully evident. There is neither humour, poetry, nor any embellishment in his writings. Clumsy, long-winded disquisitions on themes that have years ago lost any interest they may ever have had, constantly recur as we turn over page after page of his treatises.

English prose: selections, Volume 3 edited by Sir Henry Craik, 1908

The list of Weights and Measures is followed by the following page.

Prints were made of the "Camp of the Israelites" such as "The Camp of the Israelites" published in Stackhouse's History of the Bible in 1744.

Numbers 2:1

Now the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2 "The sons of Israel shall camp, each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' households; they shall camp around the tent of meeting at a distance. 3 "Now those who camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah, by their armies, and the leader of the sons of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab, 4 and his army, even their numbered men, 74,600. 5 "Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar, and the leader of the sons of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar, 6 and his army, even their numbered men, 54,400. 7 "Then comes the tribe of Zebulun, and the leader of the sons of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon, 8 and his army, even his numbered men, 57,400. 9 "The total of the numbered men of the camp of Judah: 186,400, by their armies. They shall set out first.

10 "On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben by their armies, and the leader of the sons of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur, 11 and his army, even their numbered men, 46,500. 12 "Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon, and the leader of the sons of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, 13 and his army, even their numbered men, 59,300. 14 "Then comes the tribe of Gad, and the leader of the sons of Gad: Eliasaph the son of Deuel, 15 and his army, even their numbered men, 45,650. 16 "The total of the numbered men of the camp of Reuben: 151,450 by their armies. And they shall set out second. 17 "Then the tent of meeting shall set out with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; just as they camp, so they shall set out, every man in his place by their standards.

18 "On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim by their armies, and the leader of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud, 19 and his army, even their numbered men, 40,500. 20 "Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh, and the leader of the sons of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, 21 and his army, even their numbered men, 32,200. 22 "Then comes the tribe of Benjamin, and the leader of the sons of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni, 23 and his army, even their numbered men, 35,400. 24 "The total of the numbered men of the camp of Ephraim: 108,100, by their armies. And they shall set out third.

25 "On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan by their armies, and the leader of the sons of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, 26 and his army, even their numbered men, 62,700. 27 "Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher, and the leader of the sons of Asher: Pagiel the son of Ochran, 28 and his army, even their numbered men, 41,500. 29 "Then comes the tribe of Naphtali, and the leader of the sons of Naphtali: Ahira the son of Enan, 30 and his army, even their numbered men, 53,400. 31 "The total of the numbered men of the camp of Dan was 157,600. They shall set out last by their standards."

32 These are the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers' households; the total of the numbered men of the camps by their armies, 603,550. 33 The Levites, however, were not numbered among the sons of Israel, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 34 Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, every one by his family according to his father's household.

There appear to be a few pages torn out.

The next page contains "the number of inhabitants in the known world taken from the best calculations." under the title "Introduction Table to Geography" There is a copy of this exact information in the same format in A new geographical, historical, and commercial grammar ... By William Guthrie, John Knox published in 1815. George Stell died in 1809, so either there was an earlier version or this page was penned by someone else.

The bottom hand of the second page of this duo is written in a very different hand and is chapters and verses from the bible. This continues on the bottom half of the nest page. The top of that page is the poem "forget me not"
To flourish near my native home
To blossom near my eat (?)
I cultivate a little flower
They call forget me not

Tho, oceans may between us ----
Thos distance be our lot
Dearest tho we should meet no more
Sweet girl forget me not

There are more torn out pages.

The next complete page contains two crude drawings: one of a face in profile the other of some organic image - perhaps a leaf. This page also included an example of the addition of "simple" and "compound" numbers.

The next two pages contain a long poem on

To the Memory of the Gallant and Murdered Rigeo???
Who ever copied this poem took the time to rule the pages so the lines would stay level and not run up or down the page. I cannot find any lines form it on the Internet.

Notice the date on the top right May 7, 1844. This is the only other date in the book besides the opening page. By 1844 George Stell was dead 36 years and it was 59 years since he started his book.
The Bible says that Mary came
To hear the Saviour's word;
And we are come to do the same.
And hear what Mary heard.

Hymns for infant minds, and Original hymns for Sunday schools, by A. and J ... By Ann Taylor, 1881

Who was writing in the book in 1844? Where was the book in 1844?

The Two pages after this contain some arithmetic problems done in pencil and the ditty:
Beneath this stone lies Katherine Gray
Changed from this life to lifeless clay
By earth and clay she got her pelf
And nows she s turned to earth herself
See A Whimsical Epitaph

The remainder of the book (which in fact makes up about 90% of it) is devoted to Math problems, and weight and measure charts. Here are a few examples.

In the lower right corner is a problem counting the days between Nov 17, 1738 and Sept 12, 1739. Another problem on the left uses a the year 1755.

These problems seem to have been copied from various "tutor's guides to "a compendium of practical arithmetic". One by Charles Vyse dated to 1806 another by Francis Walkingame is dated 1833. These books were used by schools and private students.

Conclusion: It would appear that aside from the entires for the baptism of the children, George Stell and others were using this book to practice writing and math.

Miscellaneous Stell Records in Birstall and Batley Parishes

Birstall

George Stell (c1778-1855), Morley, Batley

Birth: Circa 1778. Morley per 1851 census.

Note: Given the limited number of records in Birstall and Batley parishes it is possible that George was the son of George Stell born Keighly in 1752. There was a great deal of moving back and forth between these two parishes. George (born 1752) was 33 years old at the time of his marriage to Isabelle Lawson so it is very possible that he married and had children by a first wife.

Marriage: George Stell married Janet Stack on August 26, 1799, he signed she x'ed.

Children????:

  1. Betty Stell (18??-) and Joseph Barraclough

    Birth:

Marriage: Elizabeth Stell married Joseph Barraclough on December 24, 1826 in Batley Parish. Both X'ed. Witnesses Joshua Ellis and Peter Bedford who signed his name.

    Notes and Questions:

    1. Peter Bedford signed his name at the 1826 marriage of Elizabeth Stell
    2. Peter Bedford married Martha Stell in Batley parish in 1807 but it indicates that he x'ed his name.
    3. Was he the husband of Elizabeth sister, Martha?

    Children:

    1. Mary of Joseph Barraclough and Elizabeth, 17 Feb 1828 (Indexes)
    2. Joseph of Joseph Barraclough and Elizabeth, 8 August 1830 (Indexes)

1841 Census Morley: Joseph Barraclough age 35, woolen cloth dresser, Jane age 30, Mary age 13. Joseph age 11, Elizabeth age 3 Ann age 1 next to William Barraclough age 45 woolen cloth dresses and his family: wife Elizabeth age 40 and 6 children ranging in age from 1 to 15. Is this a second marriage for Joseph senior? Or is this another family altogether? No other Joseph Barracloughs show up in the census in Batley.

  2. Martha Stell (1810-) and Peter Bedford

    Birth:

Marriage: Martha Stell and Peter Bedford, October 4, 1829. Both x'ed. Witnesses: Jos Chadwick and John Oates, Batley Parish

    2. Hannah Mary 1847

    3. Tom circa 1850

In August 2008 Stella Smith wrote:

Tom BEDFORD was born at Lofthouse Gate, Wrenthorpe, WRY. He settled in Morley and lived for there the remainder of his life. In 1870 Tom married Grace Schofield at St Barnabas, Holbeck (Holbeck 9b Page 371), and after having 3 children to him, she died in 1878. Their children were:
      1. Oliver b.circa 1871
      2. Elizabeth 1874
      3. Martha born 28 March 1875. Martha - daughter of Tom and Grace was shown on the 1881 Census as being at home with them but on the 1891 Census did not appear. I couldn't find her for awhile then quite by accident found her living with Nimrod (he being a widower as Susan his wife had died) and Martha was listed as his daughter. She is actual fact was his neice! Martha in 1894 married Herbert TOMLINSON and they were my husband's grandparents. They only had the one child Irene b. in 1909 - she was my mother in law. They migrated to NZ in 1902.
In September 1879 Tom married Sarah Ann Tomkinson, (Source Dewsbury 9b Page 737.) They had 3 children:
      1. John Stell b.1881

1851 Census: George Stell head widower, age 73, cloth weaver born Morley.

1851 Census: Rathmele Court, Leeds, Peter Bedford, head, age 43, shoemaker West Ardsley, Martha Bedford, wife age 44, born Batley, Nimrod Stell Bedford, age 11, Batley, Hannah M age 4, Batley, Thomas age 2, Stanly cum ----

1861 Census: Town End Morley, Martha Bedford, head widow, age 51, woolen weaver, born Parish of Batley, Stell son age 21, cloth fuller, Born Parish of Batley, Hannah Mary daughter age 14 woolen weaver, Wakefield, Tom son age 12, scholar, Wakefield

Death of Geore Stell: June 1855 Dewsbury 9b 245 (FreeBMD)

Question ?: Who is this George Stell? I can't find an appropriate birth record.

Note: The Stell records in Birstall and Batley parishes are both sparse and confusing.
