More on John Sheard, his wife and daughters from a 1909 Batley News Article: John Sheard had two daughters, there were no sons in his family that I remember. You might have seen those 2 girls at work with the blankets. "Where" you ask. The blankets were taken from the mill to the house - did this work make dirt and cover the house with dust? Yes it did but when the work was done and cleared away then a brush and a duster soon brought things to rights again. The principle of home work was very general in those days and had much to do with the rise and progress of Batley.
It seemed a new era in the history of the family when the father removed to what was then considered to be the Mansion at Healey. Their aspirations through life had been so unpretentious that the removal to this higher sphere of life was somewhat unaccountable. But though removed from the centre of the trading movements the mother Mrs. Sheard did not lose her interest in the workers and learning, probably from conversations with the father, that the "lads" were going to stop smoking amongst the operatives during work hours she resented it so far as the old men were concerned. In a subsequent visit to the Valley Mills she came across some of the old hands. She advised them not to take any notice and if "they; said anything just to say that she had told them to do on smoking. There was in those days a familiarity between employers and employees that does not obtain today: it would be better if it did. Men and women were not ?ushed as they are today. There was no brutalised "penny hoil" man to turn back young girls who having tramped all the way from Lee Fair fighting against wind or rain or snow, just landed at the gate when this brutish fellow was shutting up and were refused admission, although he could see that they were wet through from head to foot.

The Sheards at Hick Lane Mill

The plaque now on the front of Hick Lane Mill says in part:

Opened in 1822, Hick Lane Mill was the first mill in Batley specifically designed for the total manufacture of shoddy cloth. The mill provided space for the Jubbs, Speddings, Burnleys, Foxes and Benjamin Parr- names that were to become synonymous with Batley's industrial growth. The mill was acquired by George and James Stubley in 1907. On September 25th, 1969 a fire, one of the fiercest in Batley's history, destroyed the entire mill.
Michael Sheard and sons are not mentioned on this plaque. However Sheard, Spedding and Co. were listed in 1834 as scibbling and fulling millers at Hick Lane Mill and by 1882 Hick Lane Mills was owned by Michael Sheard and Co. who according to Malcolm Haigh used electricity there for the first time in the town of Batley.

While the Sheards made enough money from the mill to live in the "lap of luxury" and build large houses in upper Batley, they unfortunately took advantage of the less fortunate segment of the population.

Hick Lane Mill exploited child labor. Children as young as eight worked a pieceners from 6 in the morning to 8 at night with two hours of overtime if the mill was busy. They were fined and beaten for being late or slow. The Sheards were fined several times for employing children under nine years of age at night and/or for more than eight hours a day.

From the Sadler Report: Report from the Committee on the bill to Regulate the Labour of Children in the Mills and Factories of the United Kingdom (London House of commons 1832).

Question: Have you recently seen any cruelties in mills?

A heap of dust alone remains of thee

Dryfield House, Healey Lane, Batley home of Michael Sheard the Younger (1798-1861) and his wife Sarah Newsome, later the home of their son John 1820-1875, Mayor of Batley 1869. John Sheard was listed there in the 1871 Census .

"Although set well back from the road with a carriage drive, the land drops away at the back. At the side is what must have been a coach house. The windows have been replaced, which changes the proportions, but it has a simple facade, though one wonders if Michael (1833-1911) who was to be an architect, had some say."

Vivein Tomlinson, 2006

In 1905 Dryfield House, Batley was given as the address of George Fox, esq and his son Louis Joseph Fox.

In January 2014 when Dryfield House, Healey Lane was advertised as a 5 bedroom house to share it was described:

"This former mill owners house was most recently used by the council as office space. Now its available as Batley's grandest house share! The building is currently being considered for listing status and has all the original Victorian features including marble fireplaces, ornate ceiling designs and huge rooms."

In the summer of 2014 Dryfield House in Healey Lane, Batley was for sale.

"It is described as a character period property and heritage asset and has planning permission for change of use from offices to flats and outline consent for seven houses in the grounds.

Dryfield House was the home of Michael Sheard, a textile manufacturer based at Hick Lane Mill, and later John Sheard, who was his son and a Mayor of Batley."

Vivien Tomlinson

A person who knows a lot about Batley and its families is Vivien E. Tomlinson who has been contributing photos, information, comments, opinions and corrections to the web site since 2004 and has been invaluable in helping me to understand aspects of the English picture that have sometimes been unclear from my American point of view.

We share common ancestors in the Sheard family. Vivien is a descendant through George Sheard (1740-1824) and his wife Hannah Blakely while I am a descendent through George's brother, Michael Sheard (1742-1811). George and Michael were the sons of Jonas Sheard (1723-1789) and his wife, Dinah Kirk (1715-??).

George Sheard and Hannah Blakely had numerous children among them Michael born circa 1777 who married Sarah Lister. Michael and Sarah also had numerous children including Michael (1798) who married Sarah Newsome. Michael and Sarah in turn had John (1820) who married Sarah Ward. John and Sarah had Eliza Rebecca (1846) who married John William Blackburn. Their daughter Ann Eliza (1885) was Vivien's paternal grandmother.

I asked Vivien to share some information about herself and her genealogical interests. Vivien writes:

I was born in the former workhouse, by then Staincliffe Hospital, in Dewsbury, and brought up in Mirfield, but baptised at Batley Parish Church where my parents had been married. Both considered themselves Batleyites. In fact the Batley roots go deeper on my grandmothers' sides, but both grandfathers played a part in Batley life.

My paternal grandfather Norman William Eley came from Derbyshire, but was in practice as a Doctor in Batley from about 1800 until his early death in 1917. It was there that he met and married Anne Eliza, daughter of John William Blackburn and Eliza Rebecca Sheard.

My maternal grandfather, Arthur Senior, was very much a Yorkshireman. Though born in Skelmanthorpe, where his father had at one time prospered as a hand loom weaver of fancy waistcoat cloth, employing several others, the family were in modest circumstances when they moved to Batley when Arthur was a baby. He was educated at Batley Parish Church School, where he was to serve as pupil teacher, certificated assistant and eventually senior assistant. After spells as Headmaster of Schools in Cawthorne and Clayton, he returned to his old school as Head from 1925 until his retirement in 1937. Both he and his wife Sarah continued to be active in Batley life. During WW11 he was deputy chief Air Raid Warden whilst she was in charge of the Red Cross Depot.

Sarah was born Sarah Grace Gertrude Binns, daughter of Isaac Binns, Batley's Borough Accountant, dialect writer, and author of "From Village to Town", and his wife, nee Sarah Thurman Robinson.

Through these connections I have roots in other old Batley families besides the Sheards, and hope in time to have a web site of my own, but interesting links do show up in Maggie's pages. In the fascinating account of pioneers of the textile trade from the "Batley News"of 1909 we catch a glimpse of a young John Blackburn, later mill owner in Batley and Berlin, and father of the John William who was to marry Eliza Rebecca Sheard. The Brearley family are mentioned, and when Robert Brearley set up in business at the Old Craft Mill in Dark Lane around 1840 John Blackburn worked as his jenny spinner.

When my parents died some years ago it seemed a pity to consign the photos and family information I had to the loft, so went along to Batley Library to see if I could find out more. Initially this was exciting as I amassed a lot of information very quickly, and when looking for the trail of one family I would notice references to another. Though we are living near London, so I don't get up to Batley as often as I would wish, the internet has opened up more lines of enquiry and it has become an addictive pursuit.

Sarah Sheard - 1830 Mug

"Sadly the mug is in a poor state and has been rather clumsily restored (though this could be rectified); at the moment I know nothing of its provenance - the object is unaccessioned and we therefore do not yet have a 'hook' for any possible background information."
