WALSH/LANGAN INTRODUCTION - HOME PAGE

Langans in Ballinrobe

My ancestor, Margaret Langan, born circa 1824, was the widow of Mathias Langan and the mother of Patrick, Mathias and Bridget Langan. Margaret lived in Ballinrobe from at least 1862 until her death in 1876. Patrick, who did not marry, also lived in Ballinrobe. Bridget married John Feerick and lived in Ballinrobe. Mathias junior married Penelope Byrne of Mochora, Shrule Parish, Mayo. The lived in both Ballinrobe and Mochora and eventually emigrated to NYC. For details of this branch of the Langan family go to Mathias Langan Senior now or at the bottom of the page.

The following Langans lived in Ballinrobe parish at the same time as Mathias Langan, Pat Langan and Bridget Langan Feerick. There are some loose connections indicated in several of the records, but nothing that closely ties these Langans to Mathias, et al.

  1. James Langan (c 1823) and Honor (Anne) Tierney

    Birth: Circa 1823

Marriage: James Langan married Anne (Honor) Tierney on May 14, 1853. The witnesses were Charles and Mary Tierney.

Occupation: Publican. Note: A publican runs a pub

Residence: Bridge Street Ballinrobe, 1851-1867, Clooncurreen 1901

    Children:

    1. Mary baptized on February 5, 1855, sponsors: Pat and M ___Tierney.
    2. Richard Langan and Catherine Feeney

Birth: Richard, of James Langan and Honor Tierney of the town of Ballinrobe, baptized on June 26 1862, sponsors: Michael Sheridan and Catherine Sheridan.

      Marriage: Catherine Feeney

      Children:

      1. Honoria, of Richard Langan and Catherine Feeney of "Coelogh (?)" baptized on May 8, 1897, sponsors: James Langan and Honor Langan. Note: James Langan and Honor Langan were most likely Richard's siblings.

Further Record: Richard Langan was listed in the 1901 census in Clooncorraun with his parents, James and Honor, see below.

    3. James, of James Langan and Honor Tierney, baptized on May 12, 1864, sponsors, Rastes Cameron and Mary Moran.
    4. Jane, of James and Honor Langan, baptized on October 11, 1866, sponsors: John Langan and Mary Langan.
Civil record: "James" Langan, publican, Bridge Street, Ballinrobe and Honor Tierney, date of birth, November 15, 1866. Death: According to the Death Indexes, Jane Langan died in 1875, age 7, Ballinrobe, Vol. 9, page 44. .
    5. Honor, of James Langan and Honor Tierney, baptized on November 9, 1868, sponsors, William Stanton and Mrs. Burke.
Civil record: James Langan of Bridge Street, Publican. The date of birth was February 25 1869.
    6. Ellen, of James Langan and Honor Tierney, baptized on January 31, 1872, sponsors, Maria Burke and ____ (it may be "Wl" [William]) "Fargher". Faragher was a relatively popular name in Ballinrobe parish.
    7. Anne, of James Langan and Honor, baptized November 19, 1873, sponsors, James Walsh and Jane Cavanow (Cavanaugh)

    Notes:

    • There may have been another child born between James and Honor's marriage in 1853 and the birth of Mary in 1855, and at least one, and more likely two children, born between Mary in 1855 and Richard in 1862 (the period which includes the missing years of 1856 to 1860).
    • Mathias, Penelope, Bridget, Michael, and Pat Langan do not show up as the sponsors of any of the known children of James and Honor. It is, of course, possible they were sponsors during the missing period.
    • The names of the children of James and Honor do not indicate a strong connection to Mathias Langan. The only common name to both of them was James.
    • There are clear connections with John Langan and Mary Langan.
    • There are a few slender connections to Mathias Langan though the Stanton family and the illegible sponsor of Ellen Langan in 1872. Stanton was not a common name in the parish.

      • William Stanton was the sponsor of one of the children of James and Honor Langan.
      • Pat Stanton and Catherine Stanton were sponsors for a child of Bridget Langan Feerick.
      • Michael Stanton was a witness at the marriage of Martin Farragher, who had very strong ties to Mathias Langan.
      • Mary Langan was a sponsor for a child of John and Catherine Stanton. The other sponsor was James Farragher.
      • It is possible that the illegible name of the sponsor for Ellen Langan in 1872 was really Farracher. Although Farragher was a very common name in the parish and this could add some weight to a connection between James Langan and Mathias Langan.

Griffith: The 1857 Griffith lists, James Langan renting a house, office and yard in Friarsquartes, West, Town of Ballinrobe, 6 Bridge Street from John Turnbridge, valued at 6 pounds and 10 shillings. James was listed at this address through 1867.

The 1901 census in Ireland lists the family of James Langan in Clooncurreen as follows:

    • James Langan, farmer, age 78, Irish/English, can read and write, head of household
    • Honorah, his wife, age 65, Irish/English, can read and write
    • Richard, son, age 38, farmer's son, read and write, Irish/English, married
    • Catherine, daughter-in-law, age 30
    • Honorah, granddaughter, age 4.

    Note:

I assume Clooncurreen is the same as what is listed on the current Ordinance Map as "Clooncorraun" which is several miles west of the town of Ballinrobe near Lough Mask.

1911: Clooncorraun (Ballinrobe, Mayo) Langan Richard 48 Male Head of Family Catholic, farmer, Langan Catherine 39 Female Wife Catholic, Langan James 90 Male Father Catholic, Langan Nora 77 Female Mother Catholic, Langan Nora 13 Female Daughter Catholic, Langan James 6 Male Son Catholic, Langan John 3 Male Son Catholic. All the adults could read and write and were both Irish and English speakers.

  2. Mary Langan does not seem to have married. Given that she was a sponsor in 1862, she was born no later than 1842. She was a sponsor for:

    1. Jane, the daughter of James Langan, in 1866, showing a clear connection to James Langan.
    2. Mary, of Thomas O'Brien and Sarah Sheridan, in 1872. The other sponsor was Thomas Hession.

      Notes:

      • Sheridans and Hessions are related in some way.
        • Sheridans were sponsors for a child of James and Honor Langan.
        • Hession is a name loosely connected to Bridget Langan Feerick (Mary Hession, alias, Mrs. Haveran, was a sponsor of Bridget's son in 1863).
        • Honor Langan and John Hession were the sponsors on May 25, 1876 of Bridget, the daughter of Michael and Mary Sheridan, of Parkgame. I believe that this Honor Langan was the wife of James.

    3. William, of John and Catherine Stanton, on July 12, 1873. The other sponsor was James Farracher.

    4. James, the son of James and Anne Brooke of High Street Ballinrobe, on February 6, 1876. The other sponsor was James Toole.

      Note:

Michael Langan was a sponsor to James Brooke's son in 1873, which makes a strong connection between Mary and Michael Langan.

Mary Langan was not the sponsor of any of the known children of Mathias Langan or Bridget Langan Feerick.

  3. John Langan, born before 1844, does not seem to have married.

    He was a sponsor twice:

    1. In 1864, with Mrs. Sherridon, for Mary, the daughter of Rastes Carmichill and Nelly "Sherridon". The margins are eroded and the date is unclear.
    2. In 1866, he was the sponsor with Mary Langan of Jane, of James and Honor Langan.

John was not a sponsor any of the known children of Bridget Langan Feerick or Mathias Langan. I have not found anything more on John Langan.

  4. Michael Langan, born by 1848, was the sponsor for:

    1. A child of Michael Ward in 1868
    2. A child in 1873 (I can't read the rest of the record, so I don't know who the child or the parents were)
    3. James Brooke in 1873

He does not appear as a sponsor for any of the known children of James Langan, Mathias Langan, or Bridget Langan Feerick.

Christine writes that Mary Langan's parents were William Langan and Honorah Sheridan. They had three children: Michael, Martin and Mary. Martin's death certificate says he was born in Co. Mayo Ireland. Mary emigrated first to Lancashire England and then to Massachusetts. Mary Langan married Martin Fahey. Martin Langan emigrated to Australia. Martin Langan married Janet (Jessie) McKay on 25 June 1890 in Richmond Victoria, Australia.

She was born in Edinburgh Scotland. Her family arrived in Victoria when she was about 2yrs old. They settled in Meredith. On this marriage cert. Martin gives his age as 44.

Martins' Death Cert. states that he died on the 29 August, 1910, and had lived in Australia for 28.5 years, 2.5 in Victoria and 26 years in NSW . Based on this info it appears that Martin arrived in Victoria C.1881/1892. His Death Cert. also states he was 66 at his time of death. A two year difference to the marriage cert. His parents are William Langan and Honor Sheridan.
