Maria Lahiff Gets Nursing Honor

Miss Maria Lahiff of Riverdale became a registered nurse and received a special award at ceremonies at St Patrick's Cathedral September 8 conducted by the St. Clares's Hospital School of Nursing.

Miss Lahiff, the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Lahiff, 3625 Waldo Ave., was the recipient of the Mother Mary Alice award given to "the ideal student nurse". She is a graduate of St Gabriel's Grammar School and St Barnabas High School.

Maria Lahiff married Joseph Pedulla on December 26, 1959 in the Church of the Visitation B. V. M., Bronx, New York

Maria Lahiff, Dr. J. Pedulla Married at Visitation Church

The Church of the Visitation was the scene of the wedding on December 26, of Miss Maria Lahiff and Dr. Joseph T. Pedulla. The Msgr. Michael F. O'Donnell of St Gabriel's Church officiated at the ceremony. A reception followed at the Commuter's Cafe in Manhattan.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Lahiff of Tucson, Ariz. Formerly of Riverdale. They flew here for the wedding. She made her home with an aunt and uncle, Mr. And Mrs. Charles Walsh, 180 Van Cortlandt Park. So. The groom is the son of Dominick Pedulla Sr. 300 W. 236 St. and the late Mrs. Pedulla.

Graduate Nurse

The new Mrs. Pedulla was graduated for St Barnabas High School and received her RN degree from St Clare's Hospital in Manhattan.

Her husband received his BS degree for Fordham University and his MD from New York Medical College, Flower-Fifth Avenue Hospital. He was an interne at Fordham Hospital and now practices in Kingbridge. He was a captain in the U.S. Army in the Madigan Army Hospital, Tacoma, Wash from 1955 to 1957.

After a honeymoon trip to California, the couple will make their home at 300 W.236 Street.

Obituary of Joseph Pedulla, April 2011

Dr. Joseph T. Pedulla, 88, of LaPorte, died at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at his residence. He was born June 16, 1922, in Yonkers, NY, to Domenico and Giuseppina (Siciliano) Pedulla of Calabria, Italy. A physician and surgeon, Dr. Pedulla had a family/surgical practice in the Bronx, New York City, for 50 years until his retirement at the age of 79. He graduated from Fordham University (1944) and New York Medical College (1947). He was a captain in the Medical Corps of the United States Army at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. He was a former president of the New York Chapter of the Catholic Physicians Guild and a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Peter Catholic Church. Early in his medical career he cared for the last existing patients with smallpox in the United States. On Dec. 26, 1959, in The Bronx, New York City, he married Maria Lahiff, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mary (John) Lake of LaPorte; three sons, Dominic (Bernadette) Pedulla of Edmond, OK, Joseph (Lisa) Pedulla of Monroe Township, NJ, and John Pedulla of Staten Island, New York City; 20 grandchildren, Rita, Joseph John (Hope), Robert, Claire, John, Edmund, Patrick, Mary, Maria, Brendan, Joseph, Annabelle, Vincent, Sean, William, Ian, Ciaran, Christian, Dominic, and Christina; one brother, Vincenzo "James" (Rosemarie) Pedulla of Mahopac, NY; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Chiara Pedulla; and two brothers, Dominick and Louis Pedulla. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Scarsdale, NY, with Monsignor Hugh McManus officiating. Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Friday, April 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at Williams Funeral Home, 5628 Broadway, Bronx, NY, on Sunday, April 10, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers, NY, following the Mass.
