Sykes in Batley Parish Early Records

HOME - Land Introduction - George Stell Sykes - John Sykes, father of George Stell Sykes - Sykes in Drighlington - Connection To All Sykes Related Pages

This page includes records for the Sykes in Batley Parish, Yorkshire.

Please note: The following does not represent an intensive study of the Sykes in Batley. It is mainly a survey based on records I came across while researching Benjamin Sykes (c.1731-1817) and John Sykes (c. 1797-1851+) of Adwalton, Birstall Parish. The records were taken from both the Bishop's Transcripts on microfilm though LDS.

Morley Chapel, Batley Parish

Various listings give the name of this Independent of Congregation Church, as the Morley Chapel or the Old Chapel. Records for Old Chapel Morley are on LDS microfilm 0828147. The records on this microfilm start in 1665 and are somewhat disorganized. Much of the early writing is hard to read and there are sections where the edges of the paper are too out of focus to read. An inscription in one of the books that comprise the records for the chapel says,

"The Independent congregation at the Old Chaple in Morley near Leeds in the parish of Batley, County of York"
There is no marriage record for Morley Chapel. Presumably marriages were recorded in the Church of England records. In addition to baptisms and burials the church papers include a list of people admitted to the church and notes on what happened to them.

In March 2009 Ron Gosney emailed:

I was fascinated to find your detail about the Sykes family records in Morley Congregation records, especially concerning Joseph and Bethia.

Firstly I have to say that I have no connection to the Sykes name whatsoever, but I am a local and family history enthusiast here in Knottingley.

The father of Joseph Sykes was William Sykes who came to Knottingley just after the Civil War, and in 1652 he led a small rebellion against payment of tithes, even having his servant take a proclamation to the town crier. He was arrested , convicted and went to York Castle because he wouldn't pay his fine of £266-13-4 even though he was a rich man, and he died there.

William's widow Grace [Jenkinson] became an active Quaker and was arrested more than once, herself being imprisoned at York Castle at one point.

There is a family tree in 'Pedigrees of the County Families of Yorkshire' compiled by Joseph Foster, and I have looked at this in Borthwick Institute at York University, although some of it seems a bit debatable. This is what it says of Joseph Sykes "Joseph (or Joshua?)

Sykes of Leeds, Merchant, to whom his father devised the manor of Whitgift, living in 1697; marr at Woodkirk, Bethia daughter and co-heiress of John Pickering esq., a captain in the army by Deborah, his wife, sister Ralph, Lord Eure, his wife. She was baptised at Woodkirk 4 Nov 1652, will dated 9 Aug 1723. He died 10th buried 14th June 1709 on Tinglaw Moor near Morley."
If you look at the IGI it says they married 30 July 1673 at Topcliffe and also Woodkirk!!

It only lists 5 children but with exception of one (John) they certainly tie in with names in Morley register:

  1. John - gent of Manningham, living in 1712, will dated 6 Sep 1757, proved 15 Jul 1760
  2. Caleb - living in 1684
  3. Elisha - living in 1684
  4. Hannah - marr 6 Apr 1708 to Robert Hesketh of Platt, co Lancaster a nonconformist divine
  5. Elizabeth - wife of John Overend. She was buried at Mill Hill Chapel 15 April 1729
Best wishes
