Sykes in Adwalton

John Sykes was born circa 1797/98 in the village of Adwalton in Birstall Parish

I have not found a baptismal record for John Sykes. However, other records indicate that he was the son of Benjamin Sykes and Hannah.

Adwalton is/was a village in the township of Drighlington. Generally a distinction was made in the records between Adwalton and Drighlington. However, at other times it appears either no distinction was made or people actually moved from Adwalton to Drighlington.

In an attempt to determine the parent's of John Sykes the following information was compiled on the Sykes in Adwalton.

**Billie Furtado wrote in October 2012: Mary Kitson Sykes had a sister, Sarah Kitson, who married Samuel Oddy. They had three children: Mary Kitson Oddy, John Oddy and Jane Oddy. Mary Kitson Oddy had a son Fred Oddy (it seems she was a single mother as there is only her name on Freds birth register). So, on the census above Richard Book and Mary had her sister Sarah Kitson's daughter, Mary Kitson Oddy, living with them and once born, Mary Kitson Oddy's son Fred. The reason I think Mary and Fred were living with them is that Samuel Oddy died in 1847, leaving Sarah with 3 children to support. Mary Sykes took in Mary Kitson and probably John at some point. Jane being the youngest stayed with Sarah. Buried with Richard Brook and Mary Sykes are her nephew John (sister Sarah's son, Mary Kitson's brother) and his wife Ann (nee Fearnley)
