George Redmonds in Surnames and Genealogy: a New Approach says:

A common Keighley surname. It may have been a variant of "Steel" and, if not, was certainly interchanged with it at times.

According to the Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames by Charles Bardsley, 1967, Stell was also spelt Steel, Steele, Stelle and is of Scandinavian origin from the old Danish word "Staal" meaning "steel".

George Redmonds doesn't list it in either of his books on Yorkshire surnames.

The majority of "Stells" listed on the IGI in Yorkshire were in Keighley Parish, Yorkshire.

The Stells of Fell Lane (Fellane)

The Land/Stell ancestors in Keighley lived in the village of Fell Lane (Fellane), a hamlet on the Beck River north of the town of Keighley.

Today a road called Fell Lane runs from the center of Keighley to the top of a hill above North Beck at which point the road is called Stell Hill. See, Photos of Keighley and Fell Lane

The earliest records in the parish, unfortunately, do not list a residence. However, some of the earliest baptismal records for the name can be connected to the later Stells in Fell Lane and include the children of John Stell starting with the baptism of his daughter, Margaret, in 1562 (which is the first record for the name in the parish).

There were four marriages between 1563 and 1569: three females and one male for whom there was no baptismal record. See the bottom of this section for the listing of the marriages.

There were four deaths between 1563 and 1592 that do not appear connected to any of the known Stells in the parish except to say that Agnes was a relatively popular name in the Stell family.

Definite links can be made in the Stell family from Ann Stell (1796) to John Stell born 1690 the son of Joseph Stell. Joseph Stell was born no later than 1670. Who were his parents and who did he marry? Did he have other children besides John in 1690?

The parish recordscontain only one possible birth of Joseph Stell in the right time frame. Joseph the son of John Stell of Fellane baptized May 17, 1657. This would mean he was 33 years old when John was born in 1690.

There is no marriage record in Keighley parish. There is no marriage listed on the IGI.

There is only one child listed for Joseph Stell and that is John born 1690.

Joseph's children and grandchildren did have connections to Fell Lane so whoever he was he was from that branch of the Stell family.

Birth: There were two Joseph Stells who were probably born in the 1720s who were having children in the 1740 and 50s.

1. Joseph son of John of Fellane who married Mary Sharpe and was the father of George Stell.
2. Joseph, wire drawer of Ingrow who married Jane Stead

There is only two baptismal records for Joseph in this time period.

The Records for Keighley Parish

The parish records for Keighley started in 1562. The records on FHC microfilm 0901264 do not start until 1600. The Yorkshire Parish Register Society published a transcript, edited by Wm. Anderton Brigg, of the baptisms, marriages and burials from April 1562 to September 1649. Records taken from this transcript are noted "(Brigg)".

The Mormon Genealogical Society had indexed marriage and baptismal records from 1562 to 1836.

The earliest listing for the name Stell in the parish records is the baptism of Margaret, the daughter of John Stell, on October 25, 1562.

Early baptisms and deaths show that there were at least four Stell families having children in the mid 1500s. These include the families of two John Stells, the family of Christopher Stell and the family of Thomas Stell.

In loving memory of William Stell of Exley Head who died January 9th 1920 age 66 years.

Also 2 children of the above who died in infancy (for info twins Walter died aged 2 in Skipton and brother James died aged 1 in Skipton). Elizabeth Ann his beloved wife who died November 6th 1923 aged 72 years.

Also Florrie, daughter of Frank and Ann Stell who died June 27th 1918 aged 4 years.

This grave was located next to Fenton Stell's grave in Utley cemetery. Both of Smith Stells (baby and the one who married Louisa Whitaker) are also burried there but they have no headstones on their graves.
