HOME - Land Introduction - Robert Walker - John Sykes

The Siddle Connection To The Land Family

Henry Siddle (c. 1735) married Sarah Crowther in 1755 in Batley Parish, Yorkshire, England. They were the parents of

Joseph Siddle (1769) who married Frances Lockwood in Batley Parish in 1794. They were the parents of

Elizabeth Siddle (circa 1806) who married Robert Walker in Batley Parish in 1828. They were the parents of

Sarah Walker (c 1829) who married George Sykes in the Leeds Parish church in 1847. They were the parents of

Elizabeth Sykes (1857) who married Law Land In Batley Parish in 1880. They were the parents of

Percy Land (born Ontario, Canada 1885) who married Meta Petermann in Smithtown, Long Island, USA in 1908. They were the parents of

Edgar (Bud) Land (1915) who married Agnes Goehle

Bud and Agnes were my parents.

Birth of Elizabeth Siddle, circa 1806 Gildersome

Elizabeth (Betty) Siddle was born circa 1806 in the village of Gildersome in Batley Parish. (Information from censuses). She was listed on her 1864 marriage to John Sykes as the daughter of Joseph Siddle, clothier. As of September 2011 no record of her birth was found.

Joseph Siddle married Frances Lockwood in Birstall Parish in 1794. They lived in Gildersome and had at least eight children between 1794 and 1819 (a period of 25 years). Three children (James 1794, Sampson 1796, and Lydia 1802) had their baptisms recorded in the Church of England Records in Birstall Parish. Elizabeth is determined to be their child based on her 1864 marriage record. The other four are persumed to be related based on commonalities of location, occupation, and other determinations. There may have been other children born to Joseph Sidle and Frances Lockwood.

The confirmation on the father of Elizabeth Siddle was rather serendipitous. I was trying to confirm the name of the father of John Sykes who was the father of George Stell Sykes who married Elizabeth Siddle Walker's daughter, Sarah. I sent for the marriage record of his third marriage in 1864. Lo and behold, he had married the widowed mother of his daughter-in-law, Sarah Walker Sykes. So I got the confirmation of not only John's father but Elizabeth's as well.

The Name Siddle

The name in the older records was spelt Siddle, Sidall and Siddall. According to the Genealogical Society of the Church of the Latter Day Saints the modern spelling is Seidel.

Redmonds lists it in Yorkshire Surnames Series Part I and says,

"The surname became established in Bradford in the 17th century and could have arrived there from a number of places. For example, in the period 1540-1620, there were Siddalls who were clothiers in Wakefield and in Holbeck (Leeds). On the face of it the name should derive form Siddal (i.e. large-nook of land) in Halifax, but there is no evidence yet to confirm this and there may be a connection with the Lancaster surname Sidall, said by McKinley to be fairly common in the south of the country during the 16th and 17th centuries."
Redmonds lists the following sources:
  • 1374 Thomas Sidale (Sowerby WCR)
  • 1545 George Siddall (Hunslet) Subsidy Rolls
  • 1622 John Sidall (Holbeck) WYR
  • 1438 Thomas Sedolles (Waddington) YD
  • 1543 Thomas Sedayle (Waddington) SR
  • 1545-56 John Sedall/Siddall (Wakefield) SR
  • 1562 James Sedell (Halifax) PR

Death of Sarah Crowther Siddle ?:

Sarah Siddle, age 78, buried April 24, 1803, Gildersome Chapel records. If the age at death is correct it indicates a birth circa 1725. Note: Sarah could have been the wife of Henry Siddle. However, the age at death indicates an age at marriage of 30.

Death of Sarah Siddle of Gildersome: Sarah Siddle of Gildersome buried December 3, 1817, age 53. If the age at death is correct it indicates a birth circa 1764.

      Notes:

      • They were listed next to Richard Brook Sykes and George Stell Sykes. George Stell Sykes married Sarah Walker, the daughter of Robert Walker and Elizabeth Siddle.
      • * From the LDS mirocfilm of the 1861 census I originally read Easter as Arthur. Subsequently I could not find the 1861 census listing on Ancestry.co.uk However, in April 2008 Glynis Butterworth emailed to say the listing was on Ancestry under "Liddle" and that the child was a daughter. I checked the record and it is indeed true - the name looks like Easter. However, it has to be some sort of clerical error as there is no birth or death listing for Easter Siddle on FreeBMD or Yorkshire BMD (nor any other name that would make sense). She does not show up in any other records. There is a listing for Arthur for March 1859. And he is the one who consistently shows up in later records. The limited number of Siddle in Gildersome in the 1861 census also supports this conclusion.

Death of Joseph Siddle: Joseph Siddle, Sandal, March 7, 1869, age 36 (Parish Record, Batley?)

      Notes:

      • Born circa 1833
      • Sandal was not in Birstall parish. John Hall informs me that Sandal is on the outskirts of Wakefield about 10 miles from Gildersome.

Death of Nancy Siddle : Hannah Siddle, age 65, from Birstall buried February 13, 1901 in Gildersome. Notes: Nancy was a nickname for Hannah. I am assuming this is the correct death record, given the limited number of Siddle deaths recorded in Gildersome. No death listed on FreeBMD under Nanny Robinson or Siddle.

    3. Ramsden Siddle 1835-1911), miner and Frances Archer and Caroline Pulter Collison

Note: Fatty cake is a variation on the Yorkshire delicacy fat 'n' bread. After the joint has been roasted the contents of the roasting tin are tipped into a container and left to cool. This leaves the dripping (fat) on top of the 'goodness' as my mother used to call it. This is what you would probably make gravy with. When cool it turns into a lovely rich brown jelly. This is mainly done with beef and pork. The fat is then spread on bread and topped with a bit of the goodness for flavour. I prefer pork dripping myself. It was a staple food of working class families - cheap and filling. When I was a lad I had fat 'n' bread for breakfast every morning. It' delicious with a slice of Wensleydale cheese on it - although not good for cholesterol levels!! John Hall, 2006

  • The connections between the other three baptisms are really just speculation. However these were the only baptisms for children of John Siddle in Leeds St Peter's at the time and the use of the name Deighton is significant.

    Censuses: No

Note: The Siddels were a limited population in the Batley/Birstall parish records. Among the "unclaimed" records is the marriage of Susannah Siddle to William Holliday on April 4, 1825, both of Batley parish. Both x'd. Witnesses were J Chadwick and James Walker (his mark). Susannah Siddel was born no later than 1805. Lydia Siddel was a "spinster" of 35 when she married the widower William Holliday. It was quite common for a sister to marry her sister's widower. There are big gaps in the records for the baptisms for the children of Joseph Siddel and Frances Lockwood so there is plenty of room for Susannah to have been their child. There is a death records listed by Free BMD for a Susannah Holliday- Sept 1839 Bradford 23 91. Lydia Siddle married the widow Holliday in December 1939. See Lydia above.

Note: Debb was not a Batley parish name. It does not appear in the birth, marriage of death indexes to 1837. There are no listings in the Censuses for the name in Batley. The IGI does not list anything helpful.

Occupation of Robert Walker: Robert Walker was a slubber, an occupation connected to the cloth industry.

1881 Census: Benjamin Siddle was listed at Beaulah Terrace in Gildersome in the census as follows:
      • Benjamin Siddle, age 27, born Gildersome, cloth finisher
      • Lavinia Siddle, wife, age 32, born Thurlston
      • John W "Siddle", son, age 13, born Thurlston, cloth finisher
      • "Laurce" Charsworth, son, age 12, born Thurlston
      • Annie Charsworth, daughter, age 10, born Leeds
      • Alice Charsworth, daughter, age 1, born Gildersome
      • Notes: There are a few strange things about this census:
        • Benjamin listed as the head, age 27, most likely DID NOT have a 13 year old son. It would mean he was only 14 at the birth.
        • The younger children all have the surname "Charsworth", yet none of the adults have that surname.
        • I believe that the name should be Charlesworth
        • Alice "Siddle" [Gildresome, Leeds GILD/6/40, 1880] which fits the birth years of Alice "Chasworth".
      Malcolm Bolton: October 20, 2005
Benjamin was the son of David Siddle and Sarah Marshall Siddle - I found him in the 1861 and 1871 censuses, with his parents. In the third quarter of 1879, Benjamin married Lavinia Charlesworth, who was a widow and already had 3 children - John W, Lambert and Annie. I found Lavinia in the 1871 census with her first husband A Charlesworth and all three children are there (ages 3, 2 and 9 months). You were therefore right about the spelling of Charlesworth - the spelling is clear in 1871 (as is the name Lambert, which looks like Laurce in 1881). You were also right to be suspicious of the relative ages of Benjamin and John: it is clear now from the 1871 census that John was the son of Benjamin Charlesworth and the 1881 census is incorrect in giving him the surname Siddle. It also seems that the 1881 census was wrong to give Alice's name as Charlesworth - if Benjamin and Lavinia Siddle were married in 1879 and Alice was age 1 at the 1881 census, she must have been a Siddle. The 1891 census shows all the names (except John, who had left home) correctly and clearly. In 1891, Lambert and Annie Charlesworth were still there, along with Alice Siddle and four more Siddle children - Sarah, Ives (another odd name), Frank and Mary.

The Siddles in Batley Parish

The records for Siddle in Batley Parish are quite limited. Moreover, where a place was listed all of the Siddles were from Gildersome with the exception of one listing from Huddersfield. The following is a survey of all the known Siddle records from Batley Parish.

Siddle Marriages in Batley Parish between 1691 and 1738

There are no records for the name Siddle in Batley Parish before 1691.

From 1691 to 1738 there were the following marriages:

  1. John Sydall to Marie Westerman on September 26, 1691 (BT).
There are no baptismal records for the children of John Siddle in Batley parish.
  2. Martha Siddale to John Stancliff of N. Bierley on April 23, 1705 (BT).
No children listed on the IGI
  3. Hannah Sidall married John Terry on May 21, 1738 (BT).
No children listed on the IGI

Notes:

  • There were no baptismal records for John, Martha, and Hannah Siddle. It is possible that:
    • They were not born in Batley parish, however, were married in Batley Parish and then moved to another parish.
    • The Siddles may have been non-conformists. Nonconformist sects could record their own baptism, but marriages and deaths were generally recorded in the Church of England records, even if the person was not a practicing member of the Church of England.

Thomas Siddle, Gildersome and Morley, 1700-1763 married Sarah Fawcett - Wesleyan Methodist connection (AKA Morley Independent)

See above.

Baptism: Thomas Siddle born circa 1700 (Based on death record). It is possible that Thomas was the son of John Sydall and Marie Westerman married in the parish in 1691.

Marriage: Thomas Sidall married Sarah Fawcett, both of Gildersome, by banns on July 5, 1721 (Batley Parish BT).

Birth of Sarah Fawcett: Circa 1683 based on death record. Sarah Fawcett, daughter of William Fawcett, born February 1, 1682, baptized May 27, 1862, All Saints Wakefield (IGI)

Notes: If Sarah's age at death was correct:

  • She would have been about 38 years old at the time of the marriage in 1721.
  • She would have been 18 years older than Thomas. It was not as unusual as it would seem for a younger man to marry a much older woman. An apprentice sometimes married the bosses widow in order to keep a business going.
Possible Children: I could not find any record of children born to them in Batley parish. However, the IGI shows the following baptisms of children of Thomas Siddle between 1722 and 1735.

Check if any of the Thomas Siddles had children before 1722 and if any reasonable connections can be made.

  • Holbeck
    1. Jane July 11, 1722
    2. Thomas, October 28, 1724
    3. John December 27, 1727
    4. Martha May 25, 1729
    5. Richard October 28, 1730
    6. Ann May 25, 1735
  • All Saints York:
    1. William April 16, 1722
    2. Mary August 1, 1723
    3. Elizabeth, November 5, 1725
    4. James, May 12, 1727
    5. Elizabeth June 9, 1728
    6. Francis September 22, 1729
    7. John, January 30, 1731
    8. Richard October 29, 1731
    9. Anne March 2, 1735
  • Hatfield:
    1. George September 8, 1723
    2. Hannah January 9, 1725
    3. Ann May 18, 1726

Deaths: The following deaths were recorded in the Morley Independent Chapel. They are the only records for Siddle in the Morley Independent Chapel:

  1. Sarah, the wife of Thomas Siddle of Morley was buried on March 4, 1764, age 81. Indicating a birth year of 1683.
  2. Thomas Siddle of Morley, age 63, was buried on June 3, 1763. Indicating a birth year of 1700.

John Siddle and Elizabeth ________

Birth:

Marriage:

Children:

  1. John Siddle (1796-) coal miner and Ester Robinson, Gildersome, Coal Miner, 1796-

John Siddle was born 04 OCT 1796 Farnham, Surrey, England to John Siddle and Elizabeth. I could not make out his place of birth on the 1851 census but in May 2007, John Hall emailed:

"His birthplace was Farnham, Surrey. I don't know what you know about English geography but Farnham is about 40 miles Southwest of London. This was backed up by his christening on the IGI - parents John and Elizabeth. There doesn't appear to be any other Siddles christened or married at the church so it is likely that Farnham wasn't his parents' regular abode. It is possible that were from Gildersome, which is why he returned there eventually, but there is no proof of it."
John Siddle married Esther Robinson in Dewsbury in 1819. They remained in Dewsbury until at least 1824 when their daughter Ann was born. By 1826 they were in Morley and by 1830 they were in Gildersome.

Siddle Deaths in Adwalton

William and Josiah (Joseph) Siddle, the sons of Joseph Siddle and Nancy Ramsden had connections to the village of Adwalton which is a hop, skip, and a jump from Gildersome. However, it is in Birstall instead of Batley Parish. The following burials listed in the Drighlington Chapel records were probably for the children of either William or Josiah:

  1. Caroline Siddle, Adwalton, December 16, 1860, age 2 years
  2. Fanny Siddle, Adwalton, April 19, 1863, age 10 months
  3. Annie Siddle, Adwalton, January 6, 1866, age 11 weeks
  4. Nancy Siddle, Adwalton, July 19, 1870, age ? years, 4 months Note: Nancy must have been a child as only children's births were listed with a year and months.
There were no Siddle baptisms in the Drighlington chapel records.

Siddles in the Tax Records

LDS Microfilm #1657962 lists the land taxes in Gildersome from 1781 to 1832. There were no listings for any Siddles from 1781 to 1818 and no listing in 1832. I have not checked to 1831. Note: There were at least three Siddle families living in Gildersome during this period.

Their son, Joseph Siddle, and his wife, Frances Lockwood, were having children in Gildersome from 1794-1819. Neither Henry nor Joseph appears on the tax lists for Gildersome. There are, in fact, no listings at all for Siddle from 1781 to 1832. Why?
