Moulton was the son of Solomon Sprague and Merbiah Cross.

Notes for NANCY ANN SHERD:
-
Anna came to MI when she was a child of 3 years of age, locating
in Onondaga, Ingham Co., MI where she was reared and educated. After the death of
her husband James H. Parks purchased a one-half interest in the mercantile business,
and four years later purchased the entire stock from Mrs. Daniels, moving the same
to another location. Mrs. Daniels then installed a new stock of dry goods and clothing,
and has now the finest establishment of the kind in the city, while she also conducts
a branch store of the same nature in the village of Springport, Jackson county. She is also
the owner of the hotel known as the Daniels House, which she remodeled and refitted in
1905 and which is the leading hotel of Eaton Rapids, being modern in all its appointments
and being ably conducted by Mrs. Yawger. Mrs. Daniels also owns nine dwelling houses in
her home city, including her own fine residence. She is a woman of exceptional business
acumen and give her personal supervision to her large and varied interests, while she
has a wide circle of friends in the city and county which have so long represented her home.

Anna/Nancy apparently had no children judging by the 1900 census records.

Thomas and Ann appear to be residing in a hotel, though it's unclear as to how
they are connected to it. Porter Knowles, 35, is listed as the proprietor, his
wife, Harriet, 34, is the landlady and their children are also in residence. However,
Thomas and Ann are listed first at this location, before the listing of the proprietor
and landlady. Possibly this is a co-ownership business arrangement?

Notes for REBECCA RICHARDSON:
-
As the 1900 census records indicate, Mary and Uriah had been married 51
years at the time of the enumeration on the 5 & 6th of June. Mary states that she was t
he mother of 2 children with one living. Records indicate that Uriah was the
father of at least 4 children. Therefore, his first wife, Rebecca must have been
the mother of Charles E and Frances A.
-
Burial: NY
Notes for MARY ANN MUMFORD:
-
Mary's sister, Samantha Mumford, born 1841 NY, was living with Mary and Uriah
in the 1880 census. Another sister, Alice Malby, born 1853, was also living with
the family, presumably this is another younger sister of Mary and Samantha as the birth year
is considerably late to be a sibling of Uriah's.

More on CAROLINE SHERD:
-
The fact that Caroline is shown as having $250 in her personal estate per the
1860 census may well indicate that she is, indeed, the daughter of William & Anna
(Emmons) Sherd. William died in 1842 while Anna died 25 May 1860. The 1860 Census for
Groveland, Livingston Co. was taken 1 Aug 1860. The $250 is very likely what was left to
Caroline from her mother's estate since she is not listed as having an occupation for
income.

#113/114
Hunt, Chester A, Head, m, w, 57, m, MI, MA, NY, None
Addie E, Wife, f, w, 57, m, NY, NJ, NY, None
On Aug 14, 1964, Jane Hunt Hawkes, obtained this information probably from Mertie Evelyn Holy Hunt. Addy Everett, Chester Adney Hunt's 2nd wife was just like Will Hunt's own mother. His own mother, Hatty Eva Stone, died when Will was only 1 1/2 years old. She never let there be any difference between Will and the girls. Evidently there were hard feelings on the Stone's part and they were distressed if Addy repremanded Will. Floy Bell Hunt had no hard feelings, but Laura Jane Hunt had. Addy taught Hatty one or more terms at school.
Addie Everett mentioned her first "Joy ride" over on Plank Road over the bumps from Jackson to Eaton Rapids when a girl of 14 she journeyed from NY state alone to her new Michigan home in 1866. This is on page 694 in Pioneer History of Ingham County.
"Pioneer History of Ingham County, pg 692, One of the greatest struggles the township has ever know was in regard to the prohibition question. Two pioneers on that subject were Albvert FDoxtader and George Washburn. Later, when the question of local option came up, there were Sylvester Davis, CCPorter, T Murray Cranston, Dr. R H Nichols, etc and other to chamipion the cause let by Rev Fred Wilber Cobett of Lansing. Those who worked for nation-wide, bone-dry prohibition along W J Bryan lines were Mrs C.A. Hunt and son William, and Mr and Mrs M C Baldwin. Very few business men had the bravery to work in these causes because they might lose a patron or a vote, so the women and no-accounts had to do it. "There are slaves who dare not be in the right with two or three." Oct 18, 1921.

- Notes for CHESTER ADNEY HUNT:
Concerning the Hunt Farm, the Plank Road (Hunt Road being a part of it) was built on the old Indian trail from Eaton Rtapids to Jackson. The road was constructed of two-inch planks eight feel long, laid on two 2 X 4 inch stringers, making a single roadway. That teams might pass, a dirt road was made at intervals along the side. Over this road, the trip from Jackson to Lansing was made daily, except Sundays, by means of Dan Hibbard's stage coaches. A toll was collected at gates stationed about every five miles along the route: One cent per mile for double rigs and 1/2 cent per mile for single rigs. This road was very satisfactory for a time, but as the planks became warped and badly decayed, Michigan Legislature amended the charter allowing the county to use gravel.

The following is from "The Pioneer History of Ingham Co, Michigan" by Mr. Franc L. Adams pg 681-714. Mrs. Floy Hayward was vice president of the TWA association. "Those who worked for nation-wide, bone-dry prohibition along W.J.Bryan lines were Mrs. C. A. Hunt and son William." "History of East Onondaga" writen by Mr. Monte Hayward. "The many changes were do largely to the cheapness of the land--40 A ...traded for a quantity of spelling books, 80 A for a pony. Among those whose patient industry and influences had much to do with the moulding of our commonwealth were the...Hunts... Grandfather Adney Hunt purchased our present home, Chester A. Hunt's from this New York companyt in 1845 and it has ever remained in the family...This being a dense forest at the time."
The original purchasers of land from the government of the US, or the State of Michigan, is what is now District No. 6 on sect 11,....Adney Hunt Jan 29, 1838. Peter Hunt was on the building committee for school 1857
In the book Pioneer History of Ingham Country, Floy Hunt Hayward is alotted a few pages for Eastern Onondaga. Her last 4 paragraphs read: "While school and church activities constituted the earlier social life, groups were continually forming to meet public needs, and we find the "paring bee" coming into existence to care for the fruits of the first orchard, in possession of Merritt Johnson, who owned the Otto Peterson home and adjoining lands. This was followed by husking bees, quiltings, rag bees, singing and spelling schools until today it seems we must have reached the zehith of civilization.
"We are today making history. Will it be that of which the coming generations can be proud and through which it can improve?
"A nation is the sum of its communities, the future of which depends on the character of its citizens. Are we teaching future citizens due respect for honest labor, reasonable service for reasonable pay, and above all the Golden Rule? Let us not forget that our duties lie with the world that is and is to be."

Notes for ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY HAYWARD:
According to Chester montgomery Hunt, in a phone conversation in Aug 2005, Janet Hawkes learned that Earl Hayward was President of General Motors. He apparently also had stock in Consumer Power and Mont and Floy had stock there also, up to $5000 which they lived off of and not the dairy farm. The dairy farm was sold to Don Todd after Mont's death. Also, apparently Grandma Hunt inherited money from Floy and Mont and sold her home for $14,000.
Mont died unexpectedly at Largo, Florida. He was a member of Onondaga Community Church, Onondaga lodge No. 197, F & A M, Onondaga Chapter No. 361, OES, Leslie Chapter No. 100, RAM, Leslie Council No. 50, RSM, and Michigan Farm Bureau.

From "The First 275 Years Of Hunterdon County 1714-1989", pg 73:
Frenchtown, Hunterdon Co., NJ "had ferry service dating from about 1741, when it was
noted as London Ferry. It has had many names, after various operators of it on both
the New Jersey and Pennsylvania shores. At various time the ferry was called
Mechlenburg Ferr, Tinbrook's Ferry, Calvin's Ferry, Sherrerd's Ferry, and Edwin's Ferry.
It was of such strategic importance during the Revolutionary War that the Council of
Safety of New Jersey on April 13, 1778, agreed to exempt "John Sherard and three men
employed by him at his ferry from doing duty in militia until further orders." Thomas
Lowrey, famous Hunterdon County landowner, purchased the ferry property about 1785."
- John M. Sherrard/Sherrerd is mentioned in "The Hunterdon Gazette" in 1829,
1830, 1833 and 1840.
More on WILLIAM M SHERD (1775 - 1860 son of
William Sherd and Margaret _______ ) and Anna Emmons
-
Using the census records and years of birth of his sons John and
Arcalos and church records, William left New Jersey for New York state in 1815.
-
From "Some Records of Old Hunterdon County 1701-1838" by Phyllis B. D'Autrechy: "1805,
June 20. Baptized WILLIAM SHERRERD and HIS WIFE, and Sary Snyder" Kingwood Baptist Church
records."
-
This may indicate that William and Anna had settled in the Kingwood area about 1805,
moving from Baptistown, Hunterdon Co., site of their marriage.
-
From the records of "Baptistown, New Jersey, Kingwood Baptist Church Record Book,
1742-1824": "1811, Feb. 16. Brother SHERRED, moderator. Agreed to write to Dividing
Creek Church in reply to their letter about conduct of David Stout "since he has
been among us." "1811, Aug 17. Thomas Roberson, moderator. Salary of Mr. McLaughlin
to be collected quarterly. Trustees: Thomas Lequear, Zebulon Stout, WILLIAM SHERRED,
Luther Opdycke, Adam Williamson, Edward West and John Smith." "1811, Sept. 14. Voted to
support a Jersey association. Messengers to the association: James McLaughlin, John Smith and
WILLIAM SHERRED." "1812, Aug 1. Special meeting held at Jonathan Roberson's. Moderator:
Thomas Roberson. John Britton and Thomas Lequear to call Mr. McLaughlin for another year.
Jonathan Roberson elected treasurer. Richard Heath and WILLIAM SHERRED to ask Edward West
what he has collected of the salary."
-
"1812, Sept. 19. Adam Williamson, clerk. A true statement of money paid Rev.
James McLaughlin:
Luther Opdycke paid $20.00,
Thomas Lequear 43.00,
WILLIAM SHERRED 60.75,
Adam Williamson 47.75,
John Smith 40.00,
Zebulon Stout 38.75,
Edward West 17.00,
Jonathan Roberson 33.00,
Total
$300.00"
- The Luther OPDYCKE who recurs in this would be a 3rd cousin of William's via
his Opdyke grandmother.
- "1815, May __. WILLIAM and ANNA SHERD dismissed by letter." William and Anna Sherd
were dismissed from the Kingwood Baptist Church, Baptistown, NJ in May of 1815, which would
indicate their move to NY. They were in Aurelius, Cayuga Co., NY by 4 June 1819 for "Power
of attorney" dated 4 June 1819 from William Sherd and Anna, his wife of Aurelius, Cayuga Co.,
New York to Jonathan Roberson of Kingwood regarding the rights of William to about 15 a.
(acres) in Amwell which were devised to Anna's mother by the will of her grandfather Baker
who resided on it at his death and bounded by Henry Kerr and John Meyers. Wit: Jonathan
Roberson and Asa N. Burnham. 8 April 1830." From "Volume I of Special Deeds."
- William Sherd first appears in the Aurelius, Cayuga Co., NY census in 1820. He is at
least 45 years of age, and other residents of the same household include (wife?) 2 females
between 26-44, two males between 10-15 (Mahlon & William?), three males between 0-9, one
female 16-25, one female 10-15, one female 0-9 and what could be his mother, Margaret and
maybe a sister-in-law or a sister:
Sherd, William, 3, 2, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0; 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 0, 1
- TOWN OFFICERS [Springport, Cayuga Co., NY] --The first town meeting was held at the
house of John Yawger, inn-keeper, the first Tuesday in April, 1823, and the following named
officers were elected: Wm. Cozzens, Supervisor; Wm. G. Harkness, Clerk; Giles Robinson,
Henry Crane and Gilbert Goodrich, Assessors; Thomas A. Buddington, Giles Robinson and
Samuel Wisner, Commissioners of Highways; John S. Toan and Moses Wisner, Poormasters; Asa N.
Burnham, Jonathan Carr and Alexander Thompson, Commissioners of Common Schools; Stephen Mosher,
Hiram Hunt and Asa N. Burnham, Inspectors of Common Schools; WILLIAM SHERD and Peter Flinn,
Commissioners of Public Lands; Samuel Marsh, Collector; Samuel Marsh and Ephraim Sharp,
Constables.
- The 1 May 1823 Tax Assessment for Springport, Cayuga Co., NY:
"Description of Real and personal Property taken by Silas Robison, Henry Crane and Gilbert
Goodrich assessors in and for the Town of Springport May 1st, 1823....
Sherd, William, resident, 2 Houses, Barn, farm, 100 lots, 48 acres, 1st (quality),
1056 real estate, ~~ personal estate, 1056 total, 3.72." William isn't listed in the 1824
assessment so it may be assumed that he and his family had moved into Livingston Co. by then.
- In the 1830 Census of Groveland, Livingston Co., NY, William is listed as between
50-59, wife 40-49, two males 5-9, two males 10-14, one male 20-29, two females 0-5, one
female 15-19 and one female 20-29.
- The 1840 Census finds William, age 60-69 and listed with him is one female 50-59
(most likely his wife), two males 15-19, one female 15-19 and one female 10-14. According
to the 1830 and 1840 census records there are a possible 11 children in William's family.
- The 1860 Federal census finds a Lucy M. Sherd in Sparta, Livingston Co., NY. This must be
Lucy M. Gilbert, wife of William's son, Laban Sherd. Lucy died about 1861 and Laban later
remarried.
- Burial William Shers : Lakeview Cemetery, Groveland, Livingston Co., NY
-
Religion: Baptist
Notes on Anna Emmons: -
page #411, for Groveland Twp., Livingston Co., NY verifies that at
least two of the presumed sons of William and Anna (Emmons) Sherd are indeed their
sons and with mother in residence.

- From the Emmons genealogy book by Corwin Emmons: 5-125 Ann Emmons (4-59)
Yet living in 1848. Married William Sherrerd prior to 1820.
- From "Volume I of Special Deeds":
"p. 322. Power of attorney dated 4 June 1819 from William Sherd and Anna, his
wife of Aurelius, Cayuga Co., New York to Jonathan Roberson of Kingwood regarding the
rights of William to about 15 acres in Amwell which were devised to Anna's mother by the
will of her grandfather Baker who resided on it at his death and bounded by Henry Kerr
and John Meyers [Mires]. Wit: Jonathan Roberson and Asa N. Burnham. 8 April 1830."
[Jonathan Roberson appears to be the son of Thomas Roberson & Catherine Pierce, b. 18 Oct
1769; d. 6 Nov 1844.]
More on MAHLON S SHERD (1805 son of William Sherd and Anna Emmons)
and Elizabeth Niback
-
Mahlon first appears in the 1830 census for Conesus, Livingston Co., NY. Also
in residence are a female 20-29 (probably his wife), one male 15-19 years old
and one female under the age of 5. The male 15-19 is most like a brother, probably William.
- Mahlon & family are listed in the 1840 Federal Census for Livingston Co. NY, p. 243,
in Conesus, Livingston Co, NY. The census shows him as being 30-39, as is his wife, and
one male 5-9, one female 5-9 and one female 10-14. Some records list Mahlon's place of
birth as New Jersey.
- It would appear that Mahlon and his family came to MI between the marriage of
daughter, Mary, in 1849 and 1850.

15th inst., at the residence of his son, William, at Fenwick, Montcalm Co., Mich., whither
he had gone to make his annual visit.
"His health had been failing since last spring. His last inllness was of about five
weeks duration. The remains were brought to Tecumseh, and on Friday last were deposited by
the side of those of his wife in our beautiful cemetery. The funeral services occurred at the
Baptist church, conducted by his former pastor Rev. J. H. Maynard of Sparta, Mich., assisted
by Rev. C. E. Conley. The text upon which the discourse was founded was 1 Cor. 15:19. His wife
died five years ago the 17th of last March. He was born in N.J. June 10th, 1805, hence at
the time of his death was 76 years, 5 months and 5 days old. In 1856 he and his wife were
'born again' into the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ and together with her he was baptized
into the fellowship of a Free Baptist church by Rev. David Marks. From that day until the day
of his death, his life was characterized by an integrity and christian faithfulness which
were exceptional. His voice, his purse, his hand were ever ready to help forward every good
work. In all departments of life, and in all currents of thought he seemed to discriminate
between the right and the wrong instinctively. As a living epistle of our Lord he was
read by all men and known to be genuine. The close of his life was like the setting sun,
full-orbed and glorious. Four children survive him. They believe he has gone to be
with Christ."
- Mahlon and his wife, Elizabeth had been baptized into the Free Baptist Church.

(application #413.304) his widow applied for a Widow's Pension.
- Continued threatenings of raids by southern refugees in Canada, together with an
unspoken, unnatural sympathy existing among the people on the Canadian border in their
behalf, produced at times, such uneasiness as to the safety of the cities along the
United States border with Canada, that General Hooker, then in command of that Department,
with headquarters in Detroit responded to Washington.
The companies were stationed at different points along the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers,
also in other parts of the state as follows: Company "A" at Fort Gratiot; Company "B" at
Fort Gratiot; Company "C" at Detroit; Company "D"** at St. Clair; Company "E" at Wyandott;
Company "F" at Detroit; Company "G" at Detroit; Company "H" at Fenton; Company "I" at Detroit.
The Regimental Headquarters were for some time at Jackson, then at Detroit until
moved to Fort Gratiot at Port Huron on June the 30th 1865, when they were mustered out
of service, paid off and disbanded. Total Enrollment--1001..... Died of Disease--18.
