Other Lands in Philadelphia

There was a limited population of Lands in the censuses in Philadelphia in 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920. Several of them were definitely connected to either Samuel or Lydia. Of the remaining Lands in the records several families were of German extraction and several were African Americans. Some of the Lands were (like Lydia and Samuel) born in England (or had fathers who were born in England), connected with the weaving industry, and were contemporaries of William and Lydia or their children. I do not know if this is just coincidence. However, since the numbers of other Lands in the censuses was so limited, I am including them for the time being in case I can connect them in some way. Among other things that are of interest is the theory that people did not move in isolation. These families were in the same industries, immigrated around the same times, and used some of the same given names.

  1. Thomas Land

According to the 1870 census index, Thomas Land, age 36, born in England, 6 ward, 17 district, roll 1391, page 144.

  2. William Land

William Land was listed in the 1880 and 1900 censuses. Based on the information in the census, William Land was born circa 1840. Based on the places of birth of the children, this family of Lands immigrated no later than 1867. However, in the 1900 census his immigration was listed as 1871.

    1880 census:

William Land and family on West End Avenue as follows:

    1. William Land, age 40, working in a cotton mill, unemployed for 5 months in 1880, born in England
    2. Margaret, wife, age 40, housekeeper, born in England
    3. A Sarah, age 21, cotton weaver, born in England
    4. Emma, age 16, working in a cotton mill, born in England

    6. A. Martha, age 8, at school
    7. B. Zenas, age 6, born in Pennsylvania

1900 census: 61st and Pine Streets

    1. William E Land, janitor, aged 60 was living , born March 1840 in England, married 41 years, no notation that he was naturalized, in the US 30 years, immigrated in 1871
    2. Margaret, wife, born August 1837, age 60, mother of 11 children, 5 still living, born in England
    3. Zenas, Land, born February 1874, age 26, married 6 years, born in Pennsylvania, weaver in woolen mill
    4. Gertrude (wife of Zenas) born January 1875, age 25, 2 children
    5. Harold, born April 1896 in Pennsylvania , age 5,
    6. William B, born June 1898 in Pennsylvania, age 1

The 1910 Census: The index for the census includes a listing for William Land age 70, however, the page does not appear to have been microfilmed. The numbers are listed from family 281 to 290, with families numbers 182 through 289 missing. William was supposed to be family 285.

Question? What is the possibility that William was related to the other Lands?

    • He is a weaver from England.
    • He immigrated around the time as other related Lands.
    • The Land population in Philadelphia was not very large.
    • He cannot be a son of John Land if he was really born in 1840. John Land had a son William born in 1848. He appears to be a bit young to be a brother of John Land.

  3. George Land

The 1900 census: Dobson Old Road, Ward 38
