Law Land and Family in The 1900 Federal Census

The 1900 census lists the family of Law Land renting a 50-acre farm in Smithtown Township, Suffolk County, New York as follows:

  • Law Land, head of household, born December 1858, age 41 years, married for 20 years, born in England, immigrated in 1881, in the US for 19 years, naturalized citizen, occupation, carpenter.
  • Elizabeth, wife, born July 1858, age 41 years, married 20 years, 9 children, 8 still living, born in England, immigrated in 1881, in US for 19 years.
  • Clarence C., son, born January 1881, age 19 years, born in England, occupation, farmer.
  • Sarah A., daughter, born, September 1883, age 17 years, born in Canada.

  • Joseph A., son, born, January 1896, age 4, born in New York.
  • Herbert A., son, born February 1899, age 1, born in New York.

There are some discrepancies here:

  • Law and Elizabeth had only been in the USA for 8 years, although, they had been on the American Continent for 19 years.
  • Law was not naturalized until 1902.
  • None of their children were born in New York.

There were no street addresses listed in the 1900 census. Based on the families who were listed very near them I believe that Law and Elizabeth were in the property that Law had just bought from Lydia Law Land.
