The Dinsdale Connection To The Land Family

Ann Dinsdale (Dinsdell) baptized Nancy Dinsdale in Keighley in 1796 married Charles Lewis Land in Birstall Parish in 1816. Their son John Land born 1818 married Lydia Law in 1857. Their son Law Land 1858 married Elizabeth Sykes. Law Land and Elizabeth Sykes were the parents of Percy Land.

The Name Dinsdale

The name was also spelled Dinsdell and possibly Tinsdale and Tinsdeall

The name probably derives from the place name Dinsdale. There was a township, called Over Dinsdale in the parish of Sockburn in the North Riding of Yorkshire.

The name was common in the Yorkshire Dales.

George Redmonds (YSS Part II) says about Tinsdale,

"A Holmfirth name now. It is a variant of Dinsdale, which derives from a place-name in Teesdale, but is difficult to explain. The two villages called Dinsdale are on opposite sides of the Tees, on land almost encircled by the river, and one theory is that they were originally detached portions of Deighton just to the south. Certainly the place suffix was 'halh' (i.e. nook of land) and not 'dale', which developed analogy with other nearby 'dale' names. Although the naming expansion of the surname was eventually in the Dales, I also found its way south to York and Leeds at an early date and it was there that Tinsdale occurred."
He lists early records as follows:
