Deaths, White Chapel, Cleckheaton 1793 to 1800

Whenever possible I have indicated the age and sex, whether the adult females were married or not, the cause of death, residence, and the date of burial. The ages were not always given, so some entries will only list the sex. Children were usually listed as the son or daughter of a given father. However there age was not always included and some of the people who were listed as, "son of " or "daughter of", were actually unmarried adults, as indicated in a few of the records. Where I do not know the age I have for the sake of convenience "female child" or "male child". In a few instances where the ages are listed for this type of entry some of these "children" are surprisingly old. I have made some sort of notation in these cases. Women were frequently listed as the wife or widow of their husband, allowing me to indicated their married state. No such information is given for men. Therefore I have no way of knowing if they are bachelors, husbands or widowers. I have listed the place of death after the cause of death for all deaths by infectious diseases to see if there was some pattern to the outbreaks. I have also indicated where there was more than one death of infectious disease in the same family.

Some entries were listed out of order by date. I have listed them in the order they appeared in the records.

Before July 1793 there was little indication of the age at death and no indication of the cause of death in the chapel records. The first time the cause of death was added to the records was in the later part of 1793. There were 18 deaths reported from July 1793 to December 1793 of which fourteen reported either the age and/or cause of death.

* From December 1795 to June 1797 an additional notation was made on some deaths regarding the religious affilations of the deceased. Non Church of England members such as Methodists and other nonconformists were buried for a long time in the Church of England Cemetary.

Other notations indicate the person mental state, there are notations such as "pious", "unprepared", "prepared" I have added this notation after the cause of death.

Relict is a word that was used to indicate a widow. My impression is that it was a word used by the upper classes because I have only seen it used with women of some standing. This particular relict was, Dorothy, the widow of Dr. Richardson. This is the only entry that includes any comments outside the ordinary. Written in the space after her death is the following:
"The account of character of this excellent Lady copied from the Leeds Intelligence of the 3rd of December.

On Tuesday last died at L Iversons Esq. Black Bank House near the town in the 74th year of her age, Mrs. Richardson, relic of the late Richard Richardson, Esq. of Bierley near Bradford. So few of the imperfections and so many of the great and shinning qualities of a Christian have rarely been seen in one person as in her. Her principles were such as the Savior of the world inculcated and her conduct through a long and useful life showed the deep and solemn impressions they had made on her mind. She was ____ly attached to none of the religious parties of the day, but exemplified in her life the rational, solid, active virtues of them all. Her religion consisted not in words but in deeds: and she was anxious to be, rather than thought to be, a Christian. She has left behind her as many mourning, affectionate friends as had the honor of her acquaintance, and what can seldom be said of the most excellent character, perhaps not a single enemy; for such was the _____regularity and cheerfulness of her _____ and such the benevolence of her heart, and courtesy of her manners that it was scarce possible to know and not esteem her.

The poor have lost in her a most munificent fried, society an interesting companion, and the church of God one of its brightest ornament.

Note: The _____ spaces indicate several words that are too faded to read.
