Petermann Introduction - Johann Berend Petermann - Engelbart - Osterloh in Ganderkesee - Ganderkesee, photos and information - Home

My great grandfather, Johann Berend Petermann, was born in Ganderkesee Germany in 1843. He spent 14 years at sea. Subsequently he married and had one child in Germany. The family immigrated to the United States circa 1880 and settled in Hoboken, New Jersey.

There were Petermanns in Ganderkesee as early as the late 1500 early 1600s.

LDS films #1431001 & 2: The Ganderkesee records are on LDS films #1431001 & 2. The film is in very bad shape. There is a lot of damage and much of it is out of focus. In addition the years jump around a lot. LDS's notes say:

Parish registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths for Ganderkesse, Olbenburg, Germany. Right and left hand pages are filmed separately for most volumes. Many frames are overexposed or blurred. Consists of ninety 8 mm strips printed onto 16 mm film in erratic order.
While they list the years 1660 to 1860 on both films, film 1431001 only covers BAPTISMS for the years 1820ish to 1860ish. The LDS microfilms are very, very hard to read. I was not able to use them successfully for genealogical research.

In June 2012 my husband and I spent some time in Ganderkesee and took a brief look at the church records. These records were computerized some years ago and are in book form. The originals are not available for viewing. We took some photos of the records. These images and other records were used to compile the following information on the Petermann family in Ganderkesee. Unfortunately, our time was limited and several of the images I photographed came out fuzzy and hard to read.

Landwehr is a road between Hoyerswege and Hengsterholz south east of Ganderkesee. Currently there are several farms buildings, in the area.

              Landwehr, Landwehren [Bearbeiten]

Landwehren waren mittelalterliche Grenzsicherungsanlagen.

Landwehren were medieval border security systems which protected the Court of Delmenhorst from enemy attacks. The 14th and 15th century Ganderkesee Landwehr stretched as far as Nuttel. The fortifications consisted of several mounds with a wall of up to 10 meters in width and 6 meters in height. On the walls were palisades and thorn reinforced wooden fences. Enemy attackers avoided these military installations because the losses were to great to warrant assault. Today only remnants of the fortifications remain.

Petermanns in Ganderkesee Today

The 2012 phone book for Ganderkesee and vicinity listed only two Petermanns neither in Gandersee per se.

However, there could be Gandersee Petermann descendants through a female line as evidenced by Hans Schnittker who lives in Hoyerwege and who's mother was a Petermann.

Hoyerwege, Ganderkesee

Petermann in Hoyerwege, Ganderkesee

Johann Christoper was born in 1810 in Sethe, Ganderkesee and died in 1872 in Hoyerswege, Ganderkesee. His son, Johann Berend Petermann, was born in Ganderkesee in 1843 and listed his residence on his enlistments is the German Merchant Marines as follows:

  • 1859 to 1864 Ganderkesee
  • 1868 to 1872 Hoyerswege

Two chestnut trees just to the left of the barn are still standing. Hans Schnittker said they were at least 100 years old.

Friedrich Petermann was born in 1875 the son of Johann Heinrich (1840-) and Anna Catherine Tonjes and the grandson of Johann Christopher Petermann (1810-1872) and Gesche Margrete Engelbart (1811-1861)

Hoyerswege Inn

Gasthof Hoyerswege, J. B. Menkens Ganderkesee Scha-iger Sommergarten und doppelte Bun-eskegelhahn [printed on back]

Hoyerswege Inn is locate next to the Petermann Property. According to plaque on the front of the inn, Hof Hoyersweg (Restaurant Hotel) was established by J. B. M. in 1849. A sign on the side reads: T. B. M. u Frau C. M. An Gottesdegen ist alles gelegen [In God's sword all is located] 1847

There was a guest house at the Old Flemish Road in Hoyerswege as early as 1816. In 1849 the inn was run by Johann Berend Menken. Emigrants from Sudoldenburgishein spent the night in the hay loft at the guest house circa 1859 as they made their way to Bremen to embark for America.

The inn still operates as a hotel and restaurant. We had a very pleasant dinner there during our stay in Ganderkesee.
