The Petermanns in Ganderkesee, Oldenburg

Petermann Introduction - Johann Berend Petermann - Engelbart - Home

My great grandfather, Johann Berend Petermann was born in Ganderkesee Germany in 1843.

There were Petermanns in Ganderkesee as early as 1699. The LDS microfilm is very, very hard to read so I have not yet been able to make all of the connections back to the earliest Petermans (if indeed they are connectable). What I have so far is the family of my ancestor Berend Petermann born in 1843 and his parents, Johann Christopher (dob unknown) and Gesche Margrete Engelbart (c. 1811).

I am collecting other records as I find them and hopefully it will all make sense someday.

Sethe is a village a few kilometers south of Ganderkesee.

Occupation: Heuermann - laborer

Marriage: Gesche Margrete Engelbart, date and place unknown - no later than 1837 - most likely Ganderkesee as Gesche's family was also from Ganderkesee.

Children of Johann Christopher Petermann and Gesche Margrete Engelbart

  1. Anne Gesche Petermann of Johann Christopher Petermann Heuerling (Labourer) "Landwohr" (Landwehr)* and Gesche Margarete born Engelbart #60, 25 March Aprl 15 1838. Witnesses: Gesche Margrete Petermann, Anna Catherine Grundmann, Johann Berend Engelbart. There is a notation under the name (something 1837)

Landwehr is a road between Hoerswege and Hengsterholz south east of Ganderkesee. Currently there appear to be several buildings, maybe farms, in the area. Landwehr, Landwehren [Bearbeiten]

Landwehren waren mittelalterliche Grenzsicherungsanlagen.

Landwehren were medieval border security systems which protected the Court of Delmenhorst from enemy attacks. The 14th and 15th century Ganderkesee Landwehr stretched as far as Nuttel. The fortifications consisted of several mounds with a wall of up to 10 meters in width and 6 meters in height. On the walls were palisades and thorn reinforced wooden fences. Enemy attackers avoided these military installations because the losses were to great to warrant assault. Today only remnants of the fortifications remain.

I am assuming the some remnants must be in the area called Landwehr.

Death of J. Christopher Petermann: 1872 (Oldenburgische Gesellschaft fur Familienkunde e. V. [Oldenburg Society for Family History]) LDS film #1431001: The film is in very bad shape. There is a lot of damage and much of it is out of focus. In addition the years jump around a lot. LDS's notes say:

Parish registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths for Ganderkesse, Olbenburg, Germany. Right and left hand pages are filmed separately for most volumes. Many frames are overexposed or blurred. Consists of ninety 8 mm strips printed onto 16 mm film in erratic order. Films 1431001 and 1431002.
While they list the years 1660 to 1860 on both films, film 1431001 only covers BAPTISMS for the years 1820ish to 1860ish.
