Duchy of Oldenburg

In 1856 the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was an absolute monarchy under the Grand Duke of Oldenburg.

"1. Boundries and Extent. This Grand Duchy consists of 3 distinct territories. 1st, The Duchy of Oldenburg, bounded on the north by the German Ocean; east, south, and west, by Hanover. 2nd, The Principality of Lubeck, inclosed in the Danish dukedom of Holstein. 3rd, The Principality of Birkenfeld, on the Rhein, nearly surrounded by Prussian territory. Oldenburh has the German Ocean on the north, and Hanover on the three other sides. Area 2,500 square miles; population 279,000. Much of the county is low and wet, and is intersected by canals and dikes, to drain it or to defend it from inundations."

A pictorial geography of the world, Volume 1 By Samuel Griswold Goodrich, 1856

In 1881 the population of the Duchy of Oldenburg was approximately 300,000. Farming was the major occupation. Farmers in low lying areas raised cattle, horses, sheep and pigs. Many of the farmers who exported their stock were quite well off. Farmers in the higher sandier areas raised grain but not in sufficient quantities to feed the local population. Consequently it was necessary to import grain. In general these farmers lived a live style that had not changed in over 100 years.

Agricultural produce consisted of wheat, rye, barley, oats, buckwheat, horse-beans, potatoes, turnips, cabbage.

The forest in the area were largely destroyed during the French occupation from 1809-13 and it was necessary to import timber from other countries including the United States.

Imports consisted of timber, boards, coal, rye, wine, iron, petroleum, tobacco, cotton cement, stones, sugar, rice, and sundry other products.

City of Oldenburg

I orginally started collecting images of the city of Oldenburg because I though Johann Bernard Petermann was born in Oldenburg circa 1846. In fact, he was born in Ganderkesee in the Dutchy of Oldenburg.

Oldenburg in Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) is situated on the Hunte River, not far from the North Sea. It has a damp climate with a lot of rain. The summers are cool and the winters are cold with occasional snow.

Oldenburg (Aldenburg) became the residence of the counts of Oldenburg in 1108. There was a huge fire in 1676 that destroyed most of the medieval buildings. Oldenburg was under Danish rule for a century. It became a duchy in 1773.
