Scheer in Gauersheim and Herrnsheim, Germany

Adam Scheer (born circa 1752) married Magdelena Koch in Gauersheim in 1771. They had several children there before moving to Herrnsheim, a few miles away . Based on the sparse records for both names in both Gausrsheim and Herrnsheim they were from some other parish.

Herrnsheim (Herrn's heim), meaning Gentleman's Home, was a Catholic village just north of the city of Worms. The "Gentleman's Home" was the "schloss" (palace or castle) of the von Dahlberg (Dalberg) family. Gauersheim is a village to the west of Herrnsheim.

Adam Scheer★ (circa 1752-??) and Magdelena Koch★ (1752-1805)

Birth of Adam Scheer: 1752 based on an age of 20 years at the time of his marriage in 1772. Possibly earlier.

Notes:

• The Worms Archives in their 2007 report suggested that Adam Scheer may have been from Gauersheim. There are records for them in Gauersheim; marriage in 1771, baptism of Franz, 1774, Marie, 1775, Ann Marie 1777, Adam 1780, Anton 1784.
• The limited number of records in Gauersheim for the names Scheer and Koch indicate that both families had not been in the parish for any length of time. The records for both names are exclusively associated with Adam Scheer and Magdalena Koch.
• The limited number of records in Herrnsheim for the name Scheer indicate that the families Scheer and Koch were not in the parish for any length of time. The records are limited to the family of Adam Scheer and Magdelena Koch.
• There are indications on the IGI that there were Scheers in Abenheim. I checked the Abenhime records and did not find any sign of Adam Scheer born cira 1752. If needed, I have the Abenheim records on file.
• Magdelena's death could indicate that she was born circa 1752 (age is very hard to read).
• Records missing in Gausersheim from 1760-1767. Death to 1760 very hard to read. No records for the name in the Gauersheim records in the mid 1760s.
• There are Evangelische records for Gauersheim (LDS #0193854) . I did not see any Koch or Scheer records. However, the microfilm was very hard for me to read.
• Peter Schulz found the marriage record of Heinrich Scheer in Strasbourg, Bas Rhin, France in 1817. According to the LDS listing Heinrich was the son of Adam Scheer and Magdelena Koch. There are a lot of Scheers in Strasbourg. And a ton of records for Strasbourg on LDS mircofilm.
• Based on her reading of the marriage license of Adam Scheer and Magdelena Koch, Astrid Holzmann believes they are from Trier. See marriage license below. There are a ton of records for Tier on LDS microfilm. And there are a few entries on the IGI none specifically for either Adam Scheer or Magdelena Koch.

The handwriting is a bit unclear but I would say their hometown is likely Trier.

Gauersheim

Gauersheim is a village in the Thunder Mountain district in the Rhineland-Palatinate.

Parts of the Protestant church in the village dates to the 12th century and there are some fragments of mediaeval grave stones in the local cemetery. There is a 120 year old plane tree in the center of the town. The village lies along the wine road.

At the time the Sheers lived in Gauersheim the village was ruled by the Baron von Wallbrunn who were the Lords of Gauershiem. The von Wallbrunns had a "castle" there from the 1400s. It is listed at Castles in German where it is described as "Late Baroque Walmdachbau with wing fragment and semi-circular stair tower."

General Notes:

• Unfortunately, many cemeteries in Germany removed the old graves and grave markers (if they existed) to make room for new burials. Consequently there are not many old grave markers in modern cemeteries. The cemeteries that we have visited are lovingly maintained with beautiful flowers. Herrnsheim's cemetery was no exception. We did not find any Göhle graves. There were a few new graves for Harbauers and the Arnold and Bardong names were very common. The only older tombstones were for former burgermeisters. There were also a few older markers for fallen soldiers - including one for Bardong and one for Harbauer.
• There were several listings for Harbauer in the Worms phone book for 2007.
• The church records were recorded in Latin and the civil records were recorded in German. The church records were recorded in the Catholic Parish Church of St Peter in Herrnsheim. The records for Herrnsheim were (more or less) written in Latin. The spelling of the names varied depending, I think, on the whim or the person recording the event. "in" was added to most female surnames, but not all. Endings for male names varied with "us", "i", "o" being most common. However, in the case of Jo(h)ann it sometimes ended with "e". Most female names ended with "a".
