2008 Email from Helen Barbour:

"My g.g.grandmother Mary McDonald married David Edgar, a stone mason, born 1851) and the names of their children are the same as on your site.

I am decended from the daughter Helen (Ellen) who was born before David and Mary married According to the 1871 Census for England they were both working in the village of Wetheral in Cumberland (now Cumbria), David, working as a stone mason and lodging with a family and Mary working as a servant at Lime House School (a boarding school for 'Ladies'). Mary was born about 20 miles over the border into Scotland at a village called Ecclefechan - I just love that name! - and it shows David as being born in Ayr, Scotland."

Kirkandrew on Esk, Cumberland, England

Kirkandrews is an extensive but sparsely populated parish in Cumbria which borders Scotland and encompasses the towns of Middle Quarter, Moat Quarter and Nether Quarter. The Sark and Liddel rivers separate the parish from Scotland.

The church of Kirkandrews-upon-Esk is two miles north-east of Longtown near the Scottish border.

Kirkandrews on Esk church was under the authority of the ancient diocese of Carlisle.

Cumberland County (now Cumbria) is in the extreme north west part of England and boarders on Dumfrie in Scotland.

Edgar was a very common name on both sides of the Scotts/English boarder and the name goes back quite far in the area.

Kirkandrews-upon-Esk - St Andrew's Church shows some lovely pictures of the ares.

I did not find any information on quarries in the area
