Carberry (Carbery)

Seven Carberry siblings (three brothers and four sisters) immigrated from Ireland to the United States. The three brothers, Peter, John and James settled in Brooklyn and all went into the liquor business.

    Probate: Peter Carberry swore that John Carberry died 19 January 1890 in New Haven, Conn. (I believe that this Peter was John's son) - at the time of his death he was a resident of Brooklyn - no widow, Children: Peter J Carberry, William A Carberry, Adeline A Carberry all full age and Edward M Carberry 12 years old.

    1875: Boarder, Jas H. Carberry, keeping liquor store, 533 Myrtle ave.

    1876: John Hurley was on trial for the murder of Officer Edward Scott which occurred after Hurley had been drinking to excess at James Carberry's saloon at Myrtle ave and Stenben st.. The officer was struck in the head with a stone that Hurley was accused of throwing. He claimed he did not commit the act as he was too drunk. James Carberry was accused of having tried to bribe Hurley into confessing. Hurley was reported to have been a member of the Jackson Hollow Gang who frequented Carberry's saloon. (There is a lot more on this story.) 1876: James Carberry was a saloon keeper on Hamilton "near the bridge" when he was scammed out of $6 by a man pretending to be a canal boat captain.
