Erxmeyer (also Erichs and Erichsmeier)

Erxmeyer Ancestry

My husband is an Erxmeyer decedent through his father's line. Melosine Erxmeyer born in Germany in 1846 emigrated to the US with her mother and siblings. She married Henry Blanck, a fellow German, in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Notes on This Page

The old German records are very hard for me to read. I can figure out most of the given names and the names of the villages but have a very hard time with the surnames. Whoever recorded the records was not consistent in making the same letters the same way all the time. Frequently, for example, a C will be make one way in one given name and another way in a second given name in the same record. I have a lot of trouble with B, C, and L. And there are a few capital letters which I still have not figured out at all. I have left a lot of these names hanging with "---" to indicate letters I am unsure of and "????" to indicate names and words I am unsure of.

Erxmeyers (also Erich and Erichsmeier) in Maspe (Reelkirchen, Lippe), Belle (Wöbbel, Lippe), Bokendorf (Bellersen, Westfalen) and Vorbruck/Meinerdingen (Hanover), Germany

Starting the research with the "Erxmeier" (Erxmeyer) brothers, Heinrich Ernst Wilhelm born 1813 and Friedrich Wilhelm born 1820, and working backwards in time showed interesting developments in both the name and in their migration in Germany and beyond.

The Development of the Name

The names appears to have stated out as ERICH and evolved over time to ERXMEYER. The ERICH became ERX and MEYER (or MEIER) was added.

Heinrich and Friedrich Erxmeyer were born in Maspe the sons of Adolph "ERICH". Heinrich and Friedrich were both married in Maspe under the name ERXMEYER [or Erxmeier] and their father was also listed at the time of both marriages as ERXMEYER [or Erxmeier]. This may sound redundant. However, the evolution of this particular name is observed in the records because the father and children often were NOT listed with the same surname. (The focus here is on the beginning of the name. The spelling of the ending as either "meyer" or "meier" appears to have depended very much on the whim of the clerk.)

Children born in Maspe to Johann Heinrich Erichs between 1756 and 1760 were recorded under the name Erichs. It was at the baptism of the children of Jurgen born in Maspe between 1778 and 1797 that the use of the letter combination ERX at the start of the name came into use. The beginning of the name as "Erx" appears to have been a corruption of the name Erich or Erichs. Why this occurred is uncertain at this time, but Jeffrey Erxmeyer has suggested that it may have reflected the local pronunciation of the name Erich which was then phonetically written by the clerk. Why this happened with this particular branch of the Erich(meier) family and not others is unclear. It did create a very unique name.

The second part of the development of the name involves the ending "meier". According to one source on the internet "meier" is derived from Middle High German meiger meant "higher or superior" and the designation was often given to stewards or landholders. Adolph Erxmeyer, the son of Jurgen, was employed as steward from at least 1826 to 1845. However, his father, Jurgen, was already "Erichmeier" when Adolph was born in Maspe in 1780 and Adolph was listed at the birth of his children as "Erich" (not Erichmeier as his father had been). Meiger evolved into meier, meyer, maier and mayer depending somewhat on the locality in Germany. The German Research Companion by Shirley J. Riemer says Meier means farm administrator, dairy farmer, farmer, tenant, castle overseer — covering quite a bit of occupational potential.

In the following history of the family I have indicated the names in bold type; highlighting the variations in the name in the records.

From Lippe to Hanover and Beyond

The earliest records for the Erich/Erxmeyer family were found (so far) in Maspe (Reelkirken) and Belle (Wöbbel) which are small towns east of Detmold.

Adolph Erxmeyer, born 1789 in Maspe, Lippe died in Vorbruck, Walsrode. He married in Belle in 1812 and had several children in Belle before moving to Bellersen sometime between 1823 (when a child was baptized in Belle) and 1826 (when a child was baptized in Bellersen.) At the 1823 baptism no occupation was listed. In 1826 Adolph was listed as a kind of manager of the Bokendorf estate of the von Haxthausen family. Bellersen is a village near Bokendorf some miles south east of Maspe and Belle. In 1828 he was back in Belle as a tenant farmer. And then back to Bellersen as an estate manager in 1831 and 1834.

Adolph subsequently moved to Hilperdingen near Walsrode where by 1845 he was a Hofmeister when his son, Heinrich, married. By 1854 and in 1860 he was listed as Adolph Erxmeyer of Vorbruck.

All of the known children of Heinrich (1813) emigrated to the United States where they settled in Hoboken, New Jersey. Several of the grandchildren of Friedrich (1820) also went to the States but returned to Germany. While there are many descendants of the Erxmeyers in the US I believe that the name itself has died out in the US. There are still Erxmeyers in Germany.

Note: On the death record of Adolph Erxmeyer (the son of Jurgen Erxmeyer and Ilsabe Berkmeyer) his mother's name was given as "Sophia Beckmeyer" and his age was given as 63. Death record are considered one of the least reliable sources for birth information especially if the deceased was elderly. There are two main reasons for this:

        • The person reporting the event is most likely under stress.
        • The general unreliability of documenting an event that occurred many years earlier.

However, I believe that the combination of records strongly support Jurgen Erxmeyer and Isabe Berckmeyer as the parents of Adolf Erxmeyer later of Meinderdingen. See the Baptism of Philipp Adolph, a son of Jurgen and Ilsabe, born in 1789 below.

More on Anne Marie Ilsabe Berkmeyer: Born Schönhagen, daughter of N. N. [name unknown] Berkmeyer (per marriage record), no later than 1758 based on an age of 20 at the time of her marriage — most likely earlier.

Jeffrey Erxmeyer says that this is really Oberschönhagen which lies a few miles west of Maspe.

The records for Ercih, Erx Erxmann, Erxmeyer etc are limited. There aren't that many possibilities for variations of Jurgen Erx (etc). Anne Marie Sophia Ilsabe Berkemeyer (and varations of spelling) is a constant. Maspe is a constant. These 9 records make neat set from marriage through the 8 children.

Why is is not under Erxmeyer (or one of the variations)? I could not find any other record that would potentially fit for Ilsabe Berkmeyer Erich(meier).

Adolf Erxmeyer★ (c1780-1853) and Henrietta EHLERT★ (Eiler?) Born Maspe, Lippe, Died Vorbruck near Walsrode

Son of Jurgen Erich[meier] and Ilsabe Berkemeyer

See above

Birth or Adolf Erxmeyer:

Maspe, Philipp Adolph father Johann Jürgen "Erichsmeier"* mother Anna Ilsabein "Beckmeiers", Mld (?) Schonhagen, July 17, (word) August, witnesses, (letter) Meyer (letter) (word) (letter) Lieutanant (letter) (same word as last unknown word) (two words, Caspar (word) Ludwig, 1789

* The handwriting in this record is quite hard to read but there is a . over the third to last letter of the name. Based on the formation of other names and words written by this same person, I believe that the surname is "Erichsmeier". LDS IGI has it listed as "Erichmanns." Based on the letter "i" in the last part of the name, I do not believe they are correct. See a photo of the actual record below.

1786 per his death in 1853. His death record lists him from Maspe the son of Jurgen Erxmeyer and Sophia nee Beckemeyer. See note on death records above.

"They came from Lippe Detmold out of the town Maspe to Walsrode Vorbrück" (Jeffery Erxmeyere, July 2007)

Birth of Henrietta Ehlert: Daughter of Christoph Ehlert and Anne Marie Holtzn born circa 1788 in Belle, Lippe, Germany.

Occupation:

  • "Hofmeister" from marriage of his son Heinrich in 1845

  • "Gutsmeister zu Bökendorf" from baptisms of his son Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Jacob in Bellerson in 1826 and Carl Martin in Bellerson in 1831

  • "Hofmann" [steward or bailiff] from marriage of his son Carl Martin in 1858 and his daughter Anne Marie in (need date)

  • "Gutsmeister auf dem Gute zu Bökendorf" from the baptism of his daughter Anna Marie in Bellerson in 1834

Notes:

"It seemed that Adolph worked as a manager of the Bokendorfer estate. A job not the highest but also not the smallest one. Name and occupation of the godfathers shows, that their belonged to the estate. "von" and "zu" in a name means noble origin, may be the owner of the estate."

Jeffrey Erxmeyer September 2008

In the records of the marriage of Heinrich 1813-1869 Adolph Erxmeyer were called a "Hofmeister" at Hilperdingen (That is a new information for me). The old german spelling for "Hofmeister" is nearly the same as "Gutsmeister". When I translated your records I puzzled between these both words: Hofmeister and Gutsmeister. The meaning is the same. I sent it already in one of my first emails: when I was a child, they told me, that my ancestor was a "Gutsverwalter" (nearly the same as "Hofmeister" or "Gutsmeister") at the estate of Hilperdingen. Your records confirm this. Adolph did the same job in Bökendorf and later in Walsrode/Vorbrück/Hilperdingen as an estate manager.

Jeffrey Erxmeyer, January 2009

Marriage of Adolph Erxmeyer and Henrietta Ehlert (Eiler):

Wöbbel LDS microfilm #0582502, 1812, -14, (14th and last marriage of the years) 26. ?br. Adolph Erxmeier (I believe the last word in this image is Erich, I do not know what the word [or name] before it is) of Maspe and Henrietta Ehlert of Belle 8.7.1788 [I believe this is her birth date]

Children:

Notes:
  • There are some discrepancies with the records of six of the children of Adolph Erxmeyer and Henrietta Ehlert (Eilers). The children were:
    1. Henrich born c 1813 Maspe, mother Ehlers per marriage, Belle, Ehlert per baptism**
    2. Friderich Wilhelm born c 1820, Maspe mother Ehlert per marriage, Belle Ehlert per baptsm**
    3. Friderich Wilhelm Ludwig Jacob 1826, mother Eilers per death record, Bellersen, Ehlert per baptism*
    4. Carl Friedrich Adolf 1828 Belle, mother Ehlert per marriage, Same per baptism**
    5. Carl Martin 1831 Bokendorf/Bellerson, mother Eilers per baptism and marriage*
    6. Ann Marie 1834 Bokendorf/Bellerson, mother Eilers per baptism and marriage*

  • * Baptism recorded in Bellerson, Bokendorf

**Baptism recorded in Belle, Wöbbel Parish

Problems:

  1. They were married in 1812
  2. Their first known child, Henrich, was born in 1813. Their last known child, Ann Marie, was born in 1834.
  3. The length of the child bearing years is quite long. It was 21 years from 1813 to 1834.
  4. Adolph would have been 24 at the birth of Henrich in 1813 and 45 at the birth of Ann Marie in 1834. Not impossible but getting up there for the times. When Adolph died in 1853 he was listed at 67 years of age. He was actually 64.
  5. Henrietta Ehlert was born in 1788. It would mean she was 25 at the birth of Heinrich in 1813 and 46 at the birth of Ann Marie in 1834. Again, not impossible but unlikely.
  6. The most problematic issue is the difference in the names for Henrietta Ehlert-Eiler. While the names on the surface seem similar the are actually two different names.

Possible Solution: It is possible that the first Mrs. Adolph Erxmeyer was Henriette Ehlert. She died and Adolph married Henriette Eilers.

However, Adolph was never a sponsor for Carl Wilhelms children. Conversely Carl Wilhelm was never a sponsor to Adolph's children.

This could be Johann Carl Wilhelm the son of Wilhelm Erichmeier and Amalie Dreves baptized in Maspe (Reelkirchen) in 1792. See Other Erichs(meyer) Records in Maspe above.

Hilperdingen, Vorbück (Walrode), Hanover

I sent Jeffrey Erxmeyer a clipping about Hilperdingen that I found on line in a Google book Hannoversche Geschichtsblätter by Historischer Verein für Niedersachsen, Stadtarchiv Hannover.

"There were originally three big farms in Hilperdingen. Nobody knows exactly, but at first they could have belonged to the abbey of Walsrode. Nobody knows about a castle there, but today you will find near the building some granitic stones as a foundation for a castle. The locality of Vorbrügge (Later Vorbrück) originated on the property of Hilperdingen. After different owners, Hilperdingen finally became the properity of the family von Mandelsloh and later of the community."

"This house is very old. I found it on an old map from 1750, it must be older then 250 years. The front was renewed 1970, but the other sides are in the old state. My father told me that it belonged to a captain. But I do not know, which Erxmeyer bought it and at which date. Uncle Bill (born 1905) told me the "Große [large/big] Jahn Friedrich"* alias Adolf Erxmeyer (?) bought it. Maybe I can get this information from the land registration office in Walsrode. So it would be not so impossible that your Melesine had visited her cousin Heinrich C. W. in this house."

Jeffrey Erxmeyer, July 2007

* Jeffrey also said his uncle Bill said that this Erxmeyer came from Lippe Detmond and was the manager of the Hilperdeingen estate in Borbrück. "He had 7 sons and 2 daughters"

In October 2016 Jeffery Erxmeyer wrote:
Our house in Walsrode/Quintusstrasse was bought 1848 by Erxmeyer. The family, who had lived there before, went to America.

The Hilperdingen estate belonged to the von Mandelsloh family. The green dot designates the Hilperdingen estate where Adolph Erxmeyer (c1780) worked. The yellow dot designates the Erxmeyer house on Quintustrasse. The fuscia dot designates the estate at Gut Graesbeck where the Erxmeyer brothers, Carl Friederich Adolph (1828) and Carl Martin (1831) presumably lived and worked.
